The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Liberal Arts’ Department of Theatre and Dance is opening its 2026-2027 production season with the iconic story of “The Outsiders” on Oct. 16 in the Church of Fine Arts’ Redfield Proscenium Theatre.
This well known story of friendship, loss and identity written by S.E. Hinton was adapted to the stage by Christopher Sergel. The Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of “The Outsiders” is directed by Associate Teaching Professor Sandra Brunell Neace, who is bringing this emotional adaptation to life.
“The biggest difference is the medium itself,” Neace said. “The novel allows readers direct access to Ponyboy's inner thoughts through narration, while the stage play brings those thoughts to life through direct address, movement and live interaction between the characters. The result is a more immediate and communal experience that lets audiences witness the story unfold in real time.”
“The Outsiders” follows a group of friends who face social inequality and conflict brought by the class divide. This clash between the working-class “greasers” and the wealthy “socs” leads to a devastating and unforeseen circumstance that changes their lives for good.
Musical theatre and dance major Kenzie Marks, who plays Cherry, explains the characters.
“They are young and naive and get themselves wrapped up into tragic things that they should never have to go through,” Marks said. “The relatability and youthful energy of ‘The Outsiders’ makes it impactful to the audience as an actor.”
While set in the 1960s, “The Outsiders” is a story that still feels relevant to modern day audiences. It is relatable to anyone who has ever struggled with loss or searched for a sense of belonging.
Theatre major Eliot Gomez plays Ponyboy Curtis, the young and intelligent teenager who the story follows.
“I want the audience to feel empowered to live life for the ones they lost who can’t do that themselves,” Gomez said. “And if they haven’t gone through that, I want them to cherish the people they have around them and not to take them for granted. To live life with them.”
This production is powerful, emotional and captivating. Recommended for ages 13 and up, this coming-of-age story is not one audiences will want to miss.
“The Outsiders” runs from Oct. 16 through Oct. 25, with a total of six performances.
Evening performances occur at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 17, 23 and 24, while the matinee shows are at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 and 25. Following the Saturday performance on Oct. 17, there will be an artist talk back.
