Simon Jowitt, director of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology and the Nevada State Geologist, was recently elected to the American Exploration & Mining Association (AEMA) Board of Trustees. AEMA is a 131-year-old national association that represents the minerals industry.
Jowitt’s term started at the beginning of the year and will last three years. Jowitt said that as a trustee, he will be representing the interests of academia and Nevada on the board, ensuring representation of both key groups of stakeholders within the organization.
“AEMA is the recognized national voice for resource exploration, the junior mining sector, and maintaining access to public lands,” Jowitt said.
Membership of AEMA includes members from throughout the mining industry, representing interests from public relations to technical services, sales, equipment manufacturing, and all facets of the mining life cycle. Many Mackay School students have presented their research at AEMA’s annual meeting, which has been held in Reno for many years.
“The annual meeting brings together American mining industry leaders and provides important networking and social opportunities,” Jowitt said.
Jeff Parshley, past president and current treasurer of AEMA, said the board looks for diversity in areas of expertise in its trustees, including representatives from academia.
“Being from academia, he brings an understanding of where research is, where it’s going, and how that might play into the future of critical minerals development in the U.S. and elsewhere,” Parshley said.
He added that the board is comprised of hard-working, smart people from throughout the industry.
“Any time you’re looking for a board, you’re looking for people who will actually contribute, do the work,” Parshley said.
Parshley was on the nominating committee for the trustee position and having gotten to know Jowitt through his participation in the College of Science Advisory Council, recommended his nomination to the committee. Jowitt’s strong work ethic, leadership in academic programs and expertise in economic geology made him a great candidate.
“We’re very glad to have him on the board,” Parshley said.
“I was very honored to be considered for the position and look forward to serving the industry in this capacity,” Jowitt said.
