The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) continues to strengthen its innovative medical research facilities, earning national recognition in 2025 rankings released by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The annual report highlights institutions across the country based on funding received from the National Institutes of Health, one of the most competitive and prestigious sources of biomedical research support.
The Blue Ridge Institute ranks basic science departments based on NIH awards granted. In 2025, the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology climbed to number 22 out of 74 departments nationwide, while the Department of Pharmacology ranked at number 25 of 79, and bringing the total ranking for UNR Med to 93 out of 145 medical schools ranked – the highest ranking ever received since 2001.
These high rankings demonstrate the institution’s strength in foundational biomedical sciences. For UNR Med, placement across multiple categories signals growth and a commitment to expanding its research footprint.
