University of Nevada, Reno Police Services has received two grant awards from the Department of Public Safety and Office of Traffic Safety aimed at continuing driver and pedestrian safety around the University's main campus.
University Police Services received a grant of $10,500 to participate in the Nevada "Joining Forces" traffic enforcement Program. The program is a high visibility, multi-jurisdictional statewide effort to increase safety on Nevada's roads by focusing on driving under the influence, distracted driving, seat belts, speed and pedestrian safety. Police Services will be participating in traffic safety campaigns associated with the program from now through September 2017.
The department has also received a grant of $29,566 for a pedestrian safety campaign. University Police Services has received grants for pedestrian safety projects since 2010. According to police services, their involvement in pedestrian safety has only grown more important as the University's population continues to expand. The funds will be used for police equipment, enforcement, educational activities and events throughout the year.
"One of the most common complaints we receive involves safety concerns between pedestrians and motor vehicles on the roadways surrounding the main campus," Adam Garcia, assistant vice president and director of Police Services, said. "With Nevada Traffic Safety funds, we are able to continually reinforce traffic laws regarding pedestrians in our jurisdiction."
Law enforcement personnel will continue to enforce traffic safety laws year-round as part of their commitment to reduce accidents and save lives. To learn more about Police Services safety initiatives, tips and tools visit Police Service's website.
