College of Education Friends host fifth annual golf tournament

Friends of the College of Education recruited a field of 32 foursomes to "Tee It Up for Teaching," May 12, at Lakeridge Golf Course, including Gov. Jim Gibbons who played in the fifth annual golf tournament that raised $33,000 for student scholarships.

The Nevada State Bank team captured first place. KRNV's foursome placed second. Third-place went to the Wells Fargo's team.

"The College has many donors and friends whose participation and engagement contributes to student success by supporting academic scholarships, equipment and technology," said William Sparkman, College of Education dean.

"Teams with two or more educators compete for the Dean's Cup, which was shared by two teams this year," said Wendy Knorr, college of education development director. The winner's included Tammy Abnernathy, Richard Vineyard, Keith Rheault, and John Vineyard. Abernathy is an associate professor in the department of educational specialties.

The Dean's Cup is also shared by the foursome of Tom Sawyer, Vern Luft, Robert Martin, and Tom Craig. Sawyer is president of the Friends and director of the Learning and Resources Center, a collaboration of the College of Education and Washoe County School District. Luft is associate dean of the college.

"Tournament sponsors make this event possible as well as special for all the players," Knorr said. "We want to thank Silver State Credit Union and Clearstar Credit Union for their generosity."

College of Education staff members served as tournament volunteers. "The teamwork displayed by the college staff is impressive," Sparkman said. "Our staff members work hard to ensure that the college operates smoothly every day. They applied those exceptional organizational skills to the event, allowed our players to concentrate on the game."

Established in 1994, the Friends of the College of Education is comprised of former educators and community members who understand that we are all impacted by education," Sawyer said. "Every Friend of the college makes an important contribution. A true champion is Jerry Sawyer – no relation – who understands the challenges of students in college and has always been available to help."
