About the performance
Apex Concerts welcomes the legendary Takács Quartet for an evening of music shaped by passion, struggle and the depths of human expression. From the grief-stricken intensity of Felix Mendelssohn’s final quartet to the haunting drama of Franz Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden,” this program explores works of profound emotional power alongside the vivid contemporary voice of Gabriela Lena Frank. Written in the aftermath of his sister Fanny’s death, Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F minor burns with urgency and anguish, standing in striking contrast to the imaginative color and rhythmic vitality of Frank’s Quijotadas, inspired by episodes from Don Quixote. The evening concludes with Schubert’s towering “Death and the Maiden” Quartet - a masterpiece of turbulence, lyricism and existential drama that remains one of the defining works of the chamber music repertoire.
