Apex Concerts opens its Fourteenth Season with a sensational program, in the hands of legendary pianist Gilbert Kalish, the violin virtuoso Chad Hoopes, alonside Apex Co-Directors Dmitri Atapine and Hyeyeon Park. A program of anniversaries, 2024 marks 200 years since the birth of Bedřich Smetana and 150 since the birth of Charles Ives. Both composers were revolutionary and philosophically connected on multiple levels: Smetana searching for Czech identity, while Ives discovering the American one as a true “American Original.” A world of influences and circumstances surrounds these names. The sunny inventiveness of Mozart measured against the turbulent passion of Smetana, the poetic lyricism of Dvořak (so inspired by Smetana) streaming directly to the groundbreaking ingenuity of Ives.

  • Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918): Petite Suite for Piano Four-Hands (1891)
