This pass will be given to you upon your arrival to tutoring. YOU MUST PARK IN THE WHALEN GARAGE IF YOU HAVE TUTORING BEFORE 5PM. After 5pm, the passes allow you to park in the Cain Hall parking lot outside the UB offices. Upward Bound is not liable for any parking tickets issued.

Taking the Bus

Free, short term bus passes are available for any student who rides the bus to tutoring at the the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Request a bus pass from the front office staff or the Tutoring Program Assistant.

Always stay safe

If you attend tutoring in the evening, the University of Nevada, Reno provides a free campus escort service that will pick you up at our tutoring location and will drive OR walk you to your car or bus stop. Mandatory Tutoring Policies

The Upward Bound Program is pleased to provide tutoring to help you achieve academic success. This success is achieved through self discipline and responsibility. Therefore, it is mandatory that you provide us with a firm commitment to the tutoring service. In return for your firm commitment, outlined below, UB agrees to provide a safe and effective study environment with knowledgeable tutors.

  • Consists of two to four hours of tutoring per week AND
  • Is Mandatory for ALL Upward Bound students*

UNLESS:

  1. The student has above a 3.0 core GPA on his/her most recent semester report card
  2. Shows no grade of a C or lower in any core class on a monthly progress/semester report

*At the discretion of your counselor, all students may be placed on mandatory tutoring.

Students must also obtain approval from their Upward Bound counselor before being able to discontinue Mandatory Tutoring. (Note: this does not apply to students with probationary status, for which tutoring is mandatory regardless of GPA and monthly grades).

Those students who show a GPA lower than 3.0 on their most recent semester report card will only be released from Mandatory Academic Tutoring upon achieving a semester GPA above a 3.0. This policy is in place in order to ensure that monthly grades are consistently maintained until the end of the academic semester.

Missing A Tutoring Session:

Upward Bound holds its students responsible for acknowledging their grades and scheduling tutoring when necessary. Once scheduled, a student's tutoring session can only be canceled or re-scheduled upon notifying their Upward Bound counselor at least 24 hours in advance. Excused absences in tutoring are to be made up within the same calendar month in which the absence occurred. Students with unexcused absences or those who have consistently missed more than four weeks of tutoring are subject to being placed on a probationary contract, and may be allowed to make up missed sessions during drop-in tutoring (per approval from their Upward Bound counselor).

Drop-in Tutoring:

Drop-in tutoring occurs during winter and spring break and allows students to attend tutoring without scheduling an appointment in advance. Drop-in tutoring mainly serves as an opportunity for students to prepare for finals; however, also provides students with the option of making up previously missed tutoring sessions if approved by their Upward Bound counselor.

A Reminder to Current Students:

Tutoring is mandatory for all students unless you have a 3.00 core GPA or above with no D's or F's. If you have above a 3.00 core GPA, you will receive full points possible in the tutoring section. If you have to begin tutoring as a mandatory student after tutoring begins, your sessions will be based on percentage of attendance and later converted into points.

Call 24 hours in advance if you have prior knowledge that you will miss a session (775) 682-6166.
