Free conference Feb. 26 and 27 boasts a wide-variety of diversity-related topics

The University of Nevada, Reno is hosting a two-day conference, Exploring Diversity and Equity in Education, Careers and the Community. Students, faculty and community members are encouraged to attend and enhance their knowledge and understanding on diversity-related topics. Organizations looking for information related to diversity in the workplace will likely develop action-orientated programs and goals using what they learn.

This free event provides multiple opportunities to learn about existing programs and resources on campus and in northern Nevada. It will also explore opportunities for networking and collaboration. The two-day exploration of diversity will include presentations, panel discussions and a guest speaker, Geneva Gay, education professor at the University of Washington in Seattle who focuses on multicultural education. Gay will talk about "Cultural Responsiveness in College Classrooms and Communities."

Sponsored by the University of Nevada, Reno's Cultural Diversity Committee, committee co-chairs Kim Beers, director of human resource systems, and Eleni Oikonomidoy, associate professor of multicultural education, encourage students and educators across northern Nevada to attend the event. It is not required to attend both days of the event, but it is recommended.

"It is important for people to recognize diversity in order to meaningfully and authentically engage with one another, identify differences and similarities and facilitate each other's growth," Oikonomidoy said. "In an increasingly interconnected world, the development of intercultural competence is important across academic disciplines, professions and community settings."

The Exploring Diversity and Equity in Education, Careers and the Community conference will be held Feb. 26 and 27 in the Joe Crowley Student Union from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day. Those interested in attending this free event can sign up at https://cdcc.eventbrite.com/.
