Dear Wolf Pack Family,

Welcome to the 2024 spring semester! I hope that everyone had a wonderful winter break with the opportunity to rest, recharge and to spend quality time with family and friends.

With the start of instruction today, we continue on our journey of challenge, discovery and excitement. We are now also well into the celebration of our 150th anniversary as an institution of higher learning. This gives us all an opportunity to look back at what has made our University so special while also looking ahead in the quest to create new moments of history. In 1904, during our “tri-decentennial” celebration, Thomas Brown (Class of ’99) the son of our first University president, LeRoy Brown, put the University’s purposes well: “… to do practical good to its students and to keep it (the University) and them in touch with the people of the state.”

As we begin 2024, the spring semester affords us all a chance to keep in touch with all communities, both large and small, both on our campus and throughout Nevada, in celebrating our own sesquicentennial. Keep an eye out throughout the semester for special sesquicentennial events and commemorative happenings that include:

  • The Jan. 31 women’s basketball game at Lawlor Events Center against Utah State is the “150th Anniversary Celebration” game, as well as a similar “150th Anniversary Game” for men’s basketball at Lawlor against Fresno State on March 1
  • The Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center is featuring 150th exhibitions throughout the celebration
  • A 150th anniversary table book will be released through the University of Nevada, Reno Press in the fall
  • A date for the screening of a 150th anniversary video will be shared with the campus community later this semester
  • An Indigenous Relations mural is planned to be added to the Ansari Business Building in the near future

More information about each of these are available on the Celebrate 150 website.

Our spring 2024 semester is a reminder that in order to be successful, we must remain committed to the values that make our University great. We are a place where we look out for one another, and where the health, well-being and sense of belonging for all of our people is of the highest priority. What will fuel our accomplishments and achievements in the semester to come is that extra sense of care, empathy and understanding that our students, faculty and staff exhibit every day through their daily interactions.

I wish you all a Happy 2024 and the very best for this new and exciting semester.

Go Pack!

Sincere regards,

Brian Sandoval
President
