A joint message in celebration of Nevada Day

We are proud that on days like Nevada Day, there is a recognition that we are all in this together, that we share the noble purposes and the highest callings, and that in working together, our two universities are capable of achieving great things.

October 26, 2023

Dear Rebels and Wolf Pack,

Tomorrow we will observe Nevada Day in our great state. It is our hope that in addition to commemorating that Nevada became the nation’s 36th state in October 1864, the people of both of our institutions also feel a resounding sense of pride that the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Nevada, Reno share a great deal of history and have an equally important role in working together in helping to shape our state’s future.

This is a day when all Nevadans come together and thank one another for the needed work they are doing – on our campuses and beyond. The impact and reach of our two universities have never been greater than what they are today. Both are classified as Carnegie R1 “Very High Research” institutions. We are both experiencing record levels of student, faculty, and staff achievement. And we are both dedicated to expanding access and opportunity for our students, driving economic growth and innovation through the impressive work of our faculty, and building transformational partnerships with the communities we serve.

We believe in the promise of both of our institutions. Our missions are complementary and serve as the basis for what has always made Nevada so great. It is the belief that as we expand opportunity, we build our sense of community, sharing in the understanding that we are always stronger when we work together.

We are proud that on days like Nevada Day, there is a recognition that we are all in this together, that we share the noble purposes and the highest callings, and that in working together, our two universities are capable of achieving great things.

We are rivals on the athletic fields, certainly. But we are also friends, neighbors and partners in academics, research, and in service.

Nevadans have always shared the same dreams. And our two universities shall always share a common future.

Go Pack! Go Rebels!

Sincere regards,

Keith E. Whitfield
UNLV President
