The Board of Regents expanded the Native American fee waiver and introduced a fee waiver for the children of veterans who were awarded the Purple Heart.

Dear Wolf Pack Family,

I hope you are enjoying your summer and taking the time to rest and spend time with family and friends. As the month of August and the fall semester are fast approaching, I wanted to update you on some exciting developments on campus.

Earlier this month we shared the good news regarding the approval of a twelve percent cost-of-living adjustment for our faculty and staff and increased stipends for our graduate students. In addition, there were other important bills passed during this past legislative session and approved by the Board of Regents that warrant your interest, and speak to the state of Nevada, Nevada Board of Regents and University’s commitment to ensure that higher education is even more accessible.

Native American Fee Waiver

First, the Board of Regents broadened the eligibility for the fee waiver for Native American students that was initially approved in 2021 by the Nevada Legislature. The revisions address residency requirements, the types of programs for which the program can be used, and calculation of the fee waiver amount.

The expanded fee waiver increases access to all NSHE institutions to enrolled members or descendants of all Federally Recognized Tribes in the United States as long as the applicant meets the Nevada residency requirements approved by the Board of Regents. The revisions also include access to dual credit, non-credit, and non-stated supported courses or programs which were previously not included in the Native fee waiver program. Veteran fee waiver

Second, the Board of Regents expanded the fee waiver for veterans to include a child of a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States who has been awarded a Purple Heart. For more information about the expansion of this benefit, please contact the Veterans Services Office at (775) 682-5935.

These fee waivers are an exciting expansion to our ongoing efforts to make our University more accessible for Native American students and veteran students and their children. We are grateful for the leadership of our Board of Regents, the Nevada Legislature and Governor Lombardo and their ongoing support of higher education.
