Fun and learning go hand in hand at KIDS University summer camps held on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. This year, 27 different full-day, weeklong camps will be offered for children ages 7-14 from June 15 to Aug. 7.The camps are offered by the University’s Extended Studies unit, and they are taught by certified teachers and graduate students, as well as professionals in their fields. KIDS U programs are designed to introduce campers to the college experience and help them discover their strengths to widen their horizons. Many campers return year after year and later become counselors.

Many of the high-quality educational camps are STEAM based, and some offerings include art, world cultures, coding, robotics, creative writing, Harry Potter, space, health care, math and animals. New topics this year include golf, architecture, Spanish language, cooking, spies, digital painting, guitar instruction, videography and stop motion animation.

Online registration is now open. Full-day camps are $325 per week. For the weeks of June 15 and June 29, the full-day camps are $260 each, as no camps will be held June 19 and July 4.

Some of this summer’s new camps are:

Biggest Little Golf Camp — Through skill-building games, contests and team challenges, beginners will learn the fundamentals and experienced players can take their skills to the next level.

Fantasy Architects — Campers will explore how structure, detail and planning shape fantasy worlds as they create their original designs.

Happy Birthday America — Campers will celebrate American creativity with this writing class designed to spark inspiration through the people, places and events that have shaped the nation in the last 250 years.

Lights, Camera, Create! — Campers will explore photography, stop-motion animation and short filmmaking. From planning and storyboarding to shooting and editing, they will create their own projects.

Pixel Painting — Campers will participate in hands-on tutorials of digital art software tools — including layers, clipping masks, custom brushes and animation mode — to create one-of-a-kind creations. Graphics tablets and styluses are provided during camp hours.

Secret Agent Academy — Academy recruits’ week will be filled with decoding messages, solving puzzles and completing missions that require sharp thinking and teamwork.

Stop Motion Animation — Campers will become filmmakers and storytellers as they learn how movies are created one frame at a time. They will write stories, design characters and sets, and animate scenes using stop motion techniques.

Tune Academy: Learn Guitar — No experience needed. Campers will learn string names, guitar parts, basic maintenance and how to play some songs. They must bring their guitars to camp each day.

Upcycled Art — Campers will upcycle items such as cardboard, bottle caps, plastic bags, old games, magazines and paper scraps into wall weavings, friendship bracelets, collages, 3D canvases, photo frames, sculptures, robots and tie-dye.
