Dear Wolf Pack Family,

As we approach the start of the spring semester, I am inspired by the promise of a new year and the collective impact we can make together as a University community.

In this spirit of hope and purpose, we pause to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose impact is recognized nationwide and celebrated with a National Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19. Together, and through our collective efforts to improve our community and world, we honor the life of this extraordinary American who furthered the ideals of community, justice, equality, and service.

Dr. King once posed a question that remains as powerful today as when he first asked it: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” His words remind us that service, justice, and compassion are responsibilities we share.

I encourage all members of the Wolf Pack Community to consider serving in some form on Monday. There are several opportunities throughout our community to give our time and attention. The ASUN Center for Student Engagement and the Multicultural Center are planning two events to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

  • University volunteers have the opportunity to partner with the City of Reno on Jan. 19 to help the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows in activities that include creating marching signs that will culminate in a march around the Boys and Girls Club facility, as well as the reading of a story about Dr. King’s life. The event will be held from 9:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 1090 Bresson Ave. in Reno. Volunteers can find more details and sign up on the event page.

  • On Thursday, Jan. 22, participants can join a Planting for Kindness event in honor of Dr. King. The hands-on service project will include painting terra cotta pots, planting flowers and delivering the flowers to residents at Atria Senior Living. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will be held in the Knowledge Center Rotunda.

No matter how you choose to serve, know that your actions help bring Dr. King’s vision to life and strengthen the community we proudly call home.

This is The Wolf Pack Way.

Go Pack!

Sincere regards,

Brian Sandoval
