Dear Wolf Pack Family,
Following a national search, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Weller has been named Dean of the College of Engineering. Dr. Weller starts his appointment on August 1 and comes to the University following a highly successful tenure at Oregon State University that has included serving as the head of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).
We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Indira Chatterjee for serving as the interim dean for the College of Engineering since April 2024.
Dr. Weller has distinguished himself as an exceptional professor, researcher and academic leader throughout his time at Oregon State, and previously at the University of South Florida.
As head of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State since 2018, Dr. Weller led the school through a period of sustained growth and accomplishment, with the faculty growing by more than 40 percent and the school’s online program seeing impressive gains from an enrollment of 750 to 4,000. Under Dr. Weller’s leadership new research centers focusing on online engineering and cybersecurity were started in the school and a third multidisciplinary center for artificial intelligence research, led by EECS faculty, was established.
Between 2018 to 2024, Dr. Weller’s school saw average annual research expenditures for faculty increase and graduate degrees granted grow, each by approximately 30 percent. In addition to many other accomplishments, Dr. Weller developed a highly successful formal mentoring program for EECS junior faculty and has emphasized redesigned programs allowing students flexibility to explore additional academic interests and take advanced courses in selected areas.
In addition to his duties as head of the School, Dr. Weller served as Executive Director of Semiconductor Programs, which led to the Corvallis Microfluidics Tech Hub (CorMic), a cross-sector consortium of more than 65 member organizations with the mission of establishing the region as a global leader in microfluidics. Previously, Dr. Weller served as Department Chair of Electrical Engineering at the University of South Florida as well as Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Weller is a Fellow with the National Academy of Inventors, as well as with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is inventor or co-inventor on 45 U.S.-issued patents. Dr. Weller received a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Weller brings a wealth of experience and achievement to his position as our Dean of the College of Engineering. Dr. Weller will help expand the College of Engineering’s research footprint while fostering impactful and transformative educational and outreach programs.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Thomas Weller and his family to the Wolf Pack Family.
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
