University student veterans hold Remembrance Day National Roll Call Friday
Names of combat service members lost since 9/11 to be read on 11-11-11 at Reno City Plaza
Following the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, student veterans at the University of Nevada, Reno have joined a nationwide grass-roots effort, Remembrance Day National Roll Call, to honor American service men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade.
On Veterans Day this Friday, local veterans, students, and campus and community volunteers will read the names of the 6,300-plus casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, now called Operation New Dawn. University President Marc Johnson will open the program after the singing of the national anthem at 7 a.m.
WHAT: Remembrance Day National Roll Call; names to be read of the 6,300-plus casualties lost since 9/11. Similar events are planned by more than 150 colleges and universities across the nation.
WHEN: Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11
- 5:30 a.m.: Event set-up, event and student veteran interviewees available
- 7 a.m.: Opening Ceremony with University President Marc Johnson
- 7:15-10:30 a.m.: Reading of names
- 11 a.m.: National Minute of Silence
- 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Reno Veterans Day Parade
- 12:30 p.m.: Amazing Grace to be performed by bagpiper Mike Connell
- 12:30-4:30 p.m.: Reading of names resumes
WHERE: Reno City Plaza, First Street and Virginia Street
WHO: The University of Nevada, Reno's Veteran Services Office, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada, Reno, the Nevada Office of Veterans Services and the City of Reno join efforts to hold the event around the annual Reno Veterans Day Parade.
WHY: The Remembrance Day National Roll Call is sponsored nationally by the Veterans Knowledge Community of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The group is a 12,000-member association for the advancement, health and sustainability of the student affairs professionals. The National Roll Call is grateful to iCasualties.org for the steadfast recording of the fallen over the past 10 years, from which the names of the fallen have been derived. The Veterans Knowledge Community mission is to advocate for best practices to help student veterans transition to college and succeed.
FOR VETERANS: In honor of Veterans Day, veterans are treated to a free tall drink at the Starbucks on campus, as well as received a 10 percent discount at Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen and Keva Juice in the Joe Crowley Student Union this Thursday, Nov. 10. Veterans also receive a 30 percent discount at the Nevada Wolf Shop, first floor of the Student Union, through Sunday, Nov. 13. Veterans can tell the cashier at the aforementioned vendors to receive their gift or discount.
