Each summer, the Quad fills with blankets and lawn chairs, as the community gathers to enjoy live music under the trees. For more than 30 years, Pack Picnics, organized by the Nevada Alumni Association, have been a beloved alumni tradition, welcoming families and friends back to campus for free, family-friendly fun
Jazz on the Quad

The University Quad came alive July 22 as the Reno Jazz Orchestra performed a Quincy Jones tribute as part of Artown. Alumni, families and community members filled the lawn — some even dancing under the trees — while vocalists Danielle Pollard and Tasche brought Quincy’s greatest hits to life with their powerhouse voices.
Social justice research
Assistant Professor of Social Work Melody Huslage investigates how Nevada nonprofits can more effectively support survivors of human trafficking. Since joining the School of Social Work in 2023, she has explored the systemic roots of exploitation and aims to design preventative educational programming for professionals statewide. Her research and teaching emphasize social justice, community-building and equity — values reflected in her work and classroom.
Advancing leadership
The University’s new Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation Tracy Ostrem (center), was officially welcomed to The Wolf Pack Family during an April 21 campus reception. Joined by President Brian Sandoval ’86 (left) and Provost Jeff Thompson (right) and University supporters, the event celebrated Ostrem’s appointment following a national search. Ostrem brings more than 30 years of advancement leadership, including record-setting fundraising campaigns at the University of Washington.
Keeping Tahoe blue

Biology Research Assistant Professor Carina Seitz, a limnologist with the Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability, prepares to lower sampling equipment into Lake Tahoe. Working with Katie Senft ’07, senior ecosystem science specialist and boat captain, and biology student Consuelo Del Rio, Seitz collects water at multiple depths to analyze microplastics and their impact on lake clarity. The long-term study is part of a broader effort to protect Tahoe’s ecosystem.
New nanofabrication lab
U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen gestures in front of the Davidson Foundation Cleanroom, while students in full cleanroom suits smile through the glass, at the Nanofabrication Lab grand opening on Apr. 18. Together, President Brian Sandoval, representatives from state and federal offices, and 200 more than attendees celebrated Nevada’s landmark investment in semiconductor and microelectronics manufacturing.
Farming resiliency
Jessie Osgard ’25 demonstrates climate-smart farming practices during the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources’ annual Field Day on May 30. The Desert Farming Initiative’s organic training farm supports small farm resiliency and food sovereignty in Nevada’s high desert — efforts that are shaping the future of agriculture statewide.
Science reporting from Costa Rica
Reynolds School of Journalism student Kat Fulwider ’25 interviews Chemistry Professor Christopher Jeffrey in Costa Rica’s La Selva Biological Research Station, part of a field reporting trip through the Hitchcock Project for Communicating Science and Noticiero Móvil. From the rainforests of Costa Rica to the courts of the French Open in Paris, journalism students are gaining hands-on global experience that blends science, culture and storytelling.
Pack Pride tees up
A colorful golf bag on the green is a playful symbol of University support during the College of Science Golf Tournament at Red Hawk Golf and Resort on Aug. 13. Since 2011, the event has raised funds for student initiatives like the Dean David P. Westfall Award for Academic Excellence and the College of Science Student Emergency Fund.
