Teaching and Learning

Highlights of the writing and speaking initiative

  • Students learn essential writing and speaking skills in their freshman and sophomore years at the University in required classes such as English 101 (Composition I) and 102 (Composition II), and recommended classes such as Communication Studies 101 (Oral Communication)
  • Students engage actively in meeting Core Objective 1 (Effective Composition & Communication) by using writing, speaking, or multimedia fluently for scholarly, professional, or creative purposes
  • As students move into their major programs during their junior and senior years, they learn to write within their disciplines in mid-major courses where writing and speaking are embedded and in writing-intensive core capstone integration and synthesis courses
