Dr. Sestili is an Assistant Professor and currently teaches Molecular Genetic Techniques. Since 2013 he has been a member of the Board of the Ph.D. School on Plant and Animal Science at DAFNE. His research focuses on genetic improvement of wheat, mainly in manipulation of genes encoding reserve proteins and key genes involved in starch biosynthesis. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Italian Society of Agricultural Genetics (SIGA).

Project overview

The Project will be focused on the use of molecular approaches in wheat genetic improvement. In particular, a reverse genetic strategy, known as TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesion IN Genomes), will be used for the targeting of genes related to durum wheat quality and yield. A durum wheat TILLING population (≈ 4’000 mutagenized plants) is available at Viterbo and will be screened using High Resolution Melting (HRM) technology.
