How Do I Pay for Study Abroad?
One of the first questions students (and their parents) ask is "Can I afford to study abroad". The answer is "Absolutely!"
Study abroad is an integral, necessary part of a twenty-first-century education—not just a luxury, or fun "extra" available only to the privileged few. As such, one of USAC's core commitments is to make study abroad an option for all students. As a non-profit, university-based organization, we understand the financial pressures students and parents face to finance their education and we are committed to maintaining modest fees for our programs.
In fact, USAC has programs in 13 countries that are comparable in cost to staying at the University of Nevada, Reno for a semester (see the map below). You can also view a full list of estimated costs by study abroad location compared to University of Nevada, Reno cost of attendance by downloading this Affordable Programs with USAC flyer.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Federal financial aid and most Nevada scholarships can be used for any USAC programs, and the Millennium Scholarship can be used toward USAC Specialty programs. You can learn how to apply your existing financial aid and scholarships to study abroad by visiting the Office of Financial Aid's Study Abroad & Financial Aid page.
Additionally, USAC awards over $100,000 in scholarships and discounts to University of Nevada, Reno students each year. You will apply for most USAC scholarships after you have been accepted to your program, but you can review current scholarship opportunities on the USAC Study Abroad Scholarships pdf.
USAC also maintains a list of external scholarships you may be eligible for—visit the Money Matters section of the general USAC website to research these additional sources of funding.
Not let concerns over finances keep you from going abroad—do your research, apply for scholarships, and plan ahead, and study abroad can be within your reach!
