Volunteer & Community Service Events

Service Days

Students planting Trees
We organize several service days throughout the year. Each service day, the Center for Student Engagement works with various community partner sites in the community to set up volunteer opportunities for students. Transportation is provided, so students just have to sign up and come to campus to participate. These service days give you a chance to meet other students interested in volunteering and learn about a community organization, while supporting our community partners.  Our annual service days include; Martin Luther King Day of Service, Cesar Chavez Day of Service, September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, National Make a Difference Day and Greeks in the Streets.

Family weekend Service Day

We help to coordinate two service days for families interested in volunteering at a various locations in the community.

  1. Each April the Associated Students of the University of Nevada hosts Family Weekend, which is a time when students invite their families to visit town and participate in a weekend of activities.  We coordinate a service project for students and their families.
  2.  Each August the Center for Student Engagement collaborates with New Student Initiatives to plan and promote a service day for students and their families the weekend before fall semester starts.

Giving Tree

Big Pile of wrapped presents

This annual program is a collaboration between the Joe Crowley Student Union and the Center for Student Engagement. Each year, we select a community partner organization that serves local children in low-income families. Students have the opportunity to spread holiday cheer by signing up to purchase Christmas gifts for one child.

Non-Profit Holiday Tree Decoration

We promote community partner organizations to students during this annual program. 10 artificial Christmas trees are placed around campus in different departments and community partner organizations sign up to decorate a tree with information about their organization and opportunities for students to get involved. The program runs annually from the end of November until the end of the fall semester.

Democratic Engagement Events

National Voter Registration Day

Every year the Center for Student Engagement, in collaboration with ASUN (Associated Students of the University of Nevada), puts together a voter registration event during National Voter Registration Day (fourth Tuesday in September). Check back later this summer for information about National Voter Registration Day 2018!

People's State of the Union

Since 2015, the USDAC (U.S. Department of Arts & Culture) has hosted the People's State of the Union as an invitation to supplemnet the President's stories by coming together in our own homes, schools, houses of worship, and community organizations to share our own take on the state of our union.

This year the Center for Student Engagement will be bringing the People's State of the Union: Story Circles to UNR. Members of the UNR community are invited to share stories from their own experiences. Stories are uploiaded to an online story portal where they can be shared and browsed. Then - inspired by these stories - an invited group of writers collaboratively comproses the Poetic Address to the Nation, performed and broadcast live.

For #PSOTU 2018, Story Circle participants are invited to share their own take on the state of our union by reflecting on any of the following prompts (or creating their own):

  • Share a story about an experience that gave you insight into the state of our union.
  • Share a story about a time you felt a sense of belonging - or the opposite - to this nation or your community.
  • Share a story of an experience that gave you hope in the past year.
