Welcome to field!
My name is Annie Monnig-Reid and I am so excited to be the Associate Field Education Coordinator. I look forward to the opportunity to get to know you better and help you grow as a student and as a social worker. I could not be more excited to be in this position. Field had a great impact on me when I was a student and on my career as a social worker. I hope it will for you too.
I decided the summer before my senior year in high school that becoming a social worker was the career for me. While on a trip to Chicago, my cousin, who was a graduate student at the time, drove me through Cabrini Green, a housing project, that is no longer in existence. While driving back from Chicago to Texas, I vividly remember lying in the back of my mother's suburban, immersed in the book, "There are no Children Here" and thinking to myself, "That's it! I am going to be a social worker." Twenty-five years later, here I am, working for the UNR School of Social Work.
Many of my years as a social worker have been spent in direct practice. I graduated with a BSW degree from University of Texas at Austin and two years later pursued and graduated with an MSW degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. Post-graduation, I was hired to work for the agencies where I did my fieldwork at Communities in Schools (BSW) and Bexar County Juvenile Probation (MSW). During my career, I have worked as a juvenile probation officer for both Bexar County in San Antonio, Texas and Los Angeles County Probation Department. I have also worked with Washoe County Child Protective Services in both investigations and permanency.
For the past 11 years though, I have focused on medical social work in a variety of areas including case management, palliative care, and outpatient dialysis. Throughout my career, I have also been a field instructor and faculty liaison. Mentoring students and assisting in the development of strong social workers is important to me and I feel passionate about this. I love being a social worker, and I hope you will too!
I am here to support you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me during this exciting time. Welcome to the University of Nevada, Reno!
