Black Lives Matter

The Reno Jazz Festival actively opposes the systemic racism, violence and human rights abuses that plague our nation.

As jazz musicians and educators, we recognize the vital role music can play in dismantling systems of oppression and injustice and are committed to advocating for much-needed change in our institutions and communities. We honor the African American origins and monumental influences and contributions of Black artists to this art form. We commit to expanding the ways in which we amplify musicians of color, elevate emerging musicians, promote gender equity and advocate for social justice. We are currently evaluating and examining the ways in which the Reno Jazz Festival can become more inclusive — honoring the history of jazz music while responding to the needs and realities of marginalized communities. We invite members of our community to join us in these efforts to create a more free and just society.

The Reno Jazz Festival stands with those seeking justice for Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor and the many other victims of racism and violence. Immediate and substantive reform to policing practices and the criminal justice system are urgently needed. This is a historic moment to listen, learn, grow, act and change.
