Software on your Office PC
The University of Nevada, Reno and Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) have negotiated with software developers and resellers to obtain their products at substantial savings which are then passed on to the faculty and staff.
We understand that there is a lot of software out there that may not be listed here. This doesn't mean that you can't use it at the University, it may just be that it is not requested enough for us to dedicate space on this page for it. However, if you would like information on purchasing any software, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Adobe Reader is a free piece of software used for viewing PDFs. It is part of the standard image for University-owned office computers. Alternatively, it can be downloaded from the Adobe website.

The University of Nevada, Reno has negotiated discounted prices for all Adobe software packages. These include:
- Acrobat Pro - PDF creation
- DreamWeaver - web design (replaced Contribute)
- Illustrator - graphic arts
- InDesign - publishing
- Fireworks - web design and app creation
- Flash Professional - web animation/ interaction
- Photoshop - photo and image management
- Premiere Pro - video editing
These software packages are available as part of the Creative Cloud suite.
Those interested in purchasing a license this software package for their University-owned office computer, should purchase through the IT Software Registration site.

University-owned computers will automatically have Microsoft Forefront installed on them free of charge - this is the enterprise version of Microsoft Security Essentials. No other anti-virus software is necessary.

The macOS operating system may be installed or upgraded free of charge on any University-owned Mac.

macOS for personally-owned computers may be purchased by faculty/staff of the University at a discounted price from the Nevada Wolf Shop (ASUN Bookstore).
This professional design tool may be installed free of charge on all University-owned computers for instructional and research use (administrative use is excluded).
This is a tool for publishing and managing bibliographies. It is available for Windows and Mac.
The full version of EndNote can be purchased from the Nevada Wolf Shop (ASUN Bookstore).
EndNote Web, the online "lite" version of EndNote, is free to all UNR faculty, staff and students (with a NetID). Further information on this product, and creating an account, can be found on the University Libraries guide.
This software is used to reset a computer to a default state when it reboots. It is ideal for use in public access computer labs.
Deep Freeze may be installed free of charge on any University-owned student-used computers only.

University-owned office computers will be automatically updated to the latest recommended version of Java. Please note, the recommended version of Java may not be the latest version.
University-owned computers are not automatically updated to the latest version of Java for several reasons:
- The latest version of Java may not be compatible with University applications.
- There may be known security vulnerabilities with the latest version of Java.
- We want to minimize the disruption that can be caused with rolling out Java as frequently as it updates.
Therefore, in the meantime, IT recommends you ignore the pop-up boxes asking you to upgrade and understand that we will automatically roll-out the most suitable version. If this causes significant issues, please contact IT Support.
JAWS is a screen reading tool designed for the visually impaired to use computers more effectively.
As long as licenses are available, Faculty and Staff of the University may have this software installed on their University computer for free by the Disability Resource Center (not Information Technology).

The University of Nevada, Reno holds a site license for this math solving, plotting and manipulation software.
All currently employed faculty may have Maple installed on their University-owned and personal computers. Please contact IT Support to arrange installation.
Mathcad is used for technical calculation and design. It is available for purchase directly from the Mathcad Website. Additionally, a student edition is available at a discounted price, also on the Mathcad Website.
Once a license has been purchased, a technician can be requested to install the software on any University-owned computer. Please contact the Help Desk for more information.
Alternatively, Mathcad is also available to all University members on Remote Services.
A license for this mathematics software is available at a discounted price from the vendor MathWorks http://www.mathworks.com.

Microsoft Office may be installed free of charge on any University-owned Mac or PC. Currently, Office 2016 for Mac and PC is the preferred version of this software package. Other versions of Microsoft Office may be installed for special, documented, reasons. The version of Office installed by UNR IT contains the following software titles:

- Excel - spreadsheet
- InfoPath - forms
- Skype for Business - communication
- OneNote - note organization
- Outlook - emails
- PowerPoint - presentations
- Publisher - brochures

Please note, Microsoft does not include Office for the iPad in their higher education licensing at this time. This product has to be bought from the Apple App Store.
Microsoft Office for a personal computer may be obtained by any employee free of charge, for up to 5 devices as part of the Home Use Program.
Microsoft Lync is an instant messaging, conference, and collaboration tool available to all employees of the University. Collaboration can also occur with people outside of the University.
Information on getting an account for, and the many features of, Lync can be found in the IT department's comprehensive documentation.
Installation is free for all University-owned computers. It is available as part of an Office 2013 or Office for Mac 2011 installation, or a standalone Lync client may be installed. Please contact IT Support for more details.
The University of Nevada, Reno has negotiated discounted prices for Microsoft software titles that do not fall under our free of charge campus agreement. These software packages include:
- Expression Web - web design
- Project - project organization
- SQL Server - large-scale database management
- Visio - flowchart and organization chart design
- Visual Studio - programming
Those interested in purchasing a license for any of this software for their University-owned office computer, should contact our preferred software provider.
Windows XP. The IT department will no longer install Windows XP onto a University-owned computer. However, we will continue to provide support for the operating system, should you need technical assistance.
Windows Vista. The IT department will not install Vista onto any University-owned computers. We strongly recommend upgrading Vista to Windows 7 - this can be installed free of charge on any University-owned computer.
Windows 7. This is the preferred operating system for computers at the University. Any University-owned computer may have Windows 7 installed or upgraded free of charge. Please contact IT Support to arrange installation.
Windows 8. UNR IT does not recommend installing Windows 8 on a University computer as it is not an enterprise operating system. Any University-owned computer with Windows 8 may only receive a limited amount of support from the IT department. Currently, we recommend down-grading a Windows 8 computer to Windows 7.

This is a desktop client for access to NSHE's Human Resources (HR) and Financial (FIN) system on the Mustang server. The University has a site-license for this software. It may be installed on any University-owned computer.

Read&Write is a literacy software package that integrates reading, writing, studying, and research support tools within common applications.
Purchasing a license for SAS to be installed on your UNR-owned Office computer (PC or Mac) also allows you to install a copy of the software on your personal computer as well.
The software must be installed on the University-owned computer before it is installed on your personal machine.
