Parents and family orientation information

The parent and family program is part of the overall new student orientation experience. Orientation programs for parents include many of the same workshops as the students. By attending parent orientation, you'll learn about student services available to help you provide greater support to your student. See below for more information about the parent program including a sample schedule.

  • The parent program is separate from the student although will cover similar information.
  • While parents and students are separate for the majority of the orientation, there is time to connect and take care of business.
  • Students must register their parents/guests through their orientation registration account.
  • There is a $75 per guest fee which covers programming, materials and meals.

Overnight orientation for new student parents

  • Overnight program details

    Before you Attend:

    • Activate your NetID online. You will need your NetID in order to make changes to your class schedule or register for classes during Orientation.
    • Check your MyNEVADA account regularly and ensure that your “To Do List” is complete.

    What to Pack:

    • Dress in clothes and shoes that you’ll be comfortable wearing indoors, outdoors, and while doing a lot of walking.
    • Pajamas and toiletries
    • A change of clothing for the second day
    • Sneakers and a change of clothing that you can wear to the Weigand Fitness Center

    When to Arrive:

    • Check in is from 10:45 am – 11:15 am at the Nevada Living Learning Community residence hall. Please park in the Sierra Garage, entrance located at 1264 N. Sierra Street.
    • This is an overnight program which will conclude by 5:00 pm on the second day.

    Parking and Shuttle Service:

    • Please park in the Sierra Garage, entrance located at 1264 N. Sierra Street.
    • Download and print a parking pass.
    • Parking passes will also be available at check in.
    • If you are traveling to Reno by plane, a shuttle service between the airport and the university will be provided. Please proceed to baggage claim to be directed to the shuttle. Shuttles to campus on day one will operate between 10:00 am – 12:30 pm. Return service on day two operates between 3:00 pm – 5:15 pm. The campus drop off and pick up location is near the Nevada Living Learning Community.

    Parents and Guests:

    • Parents and guests are invited to attend orientation at the same time as their student.
    • Parents and guests will attend a separate program apart from the student.
    • Parents and guest registrations can be made or canceled only by signing into the student’s orientation registration profile. All changes must be done 10 days prior to your session.
    • There is a $75 per guest registration fee which includes programming, materials and meals.
    • Parents and guests have the option to stay overnight in a residence hall, for an additional $55 per guest overnight fee. This is not a requirement; some parents and guests choose to find their own overnight accommodations.

    Changing Orientation Dates:

    • If you need to change your orientation date, please sign into your orientation registration profile and choose from among the currently available dates.
    • If a date does not appear on the list, it is closed.
    • We do not have waitlists. Students must choose from the available dates.
    • Changes can be made up to 10 days prior to your session.

    Accommodations:

    • If you, your parents, or guests require any special accommodations during orientation, contact our office as soon as possible (no later than 10 days prior to your session) with a detailed request.

    Please do not make travel arrangements prior to confirming your Orientation date. Final date availability is determined through the sign up system, as each session is limited by both total attendees, and individual college totals.

    • This is a single day program that will conclude by 8:30 pm.

    • Download and print a parking pass.
    • Parking passes will also be available at check in.

Single day orientation for transfer student parents

  • Transfer orientation program details

    Costs: The parent/guest fee is $30.00 for the program. The parent program expenses include lunch, supplies/materiels, and program operation.

    Refund: Parent/guest program fees will be refunded if reservations are cancelled 10 days prior to the scheduled program. There is a $20 processing fee.

    Parents and Guests: We encourage parents and Guests to attend the orientation program, as their knowledge and awareness of campus resources assists in easing a student’s transition to the University. For this program only, students and parents/guests follow the same schedule.

    Check-In: Check-in for the Transfer program is from 7:30 to 8:45 AM at the Joe Crowley Student Union (North Entrance).

    Session Times: Welcome will be start at 9:00 AM, with various workshops, small groups and other activities following throughout the day and into the afternoon. Lunch and snacks are provided.

    What to Wear: Each session takes place on the 255-acre University of Nevada campus. Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear, as many spaces throughout campus are utilized throughout the program

    What to Bring: Most things are provided, yet please bring pen and paper to take notes, and appropriate clothes (Reno weather can fluctuate throughout the day). Spending money is also nice, but not required.

    Travel to Campus: Travel to the University is not included as part of the Orientation program. If traveling by plane, the University is easily accessed from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, located about 15 minutes from campus. If traveling by car, campus is easily accessed from Interstate 80 via North Virginia Street.

    Parking: Space has been allocated in the West Stadium Complex, entrance located at Virginia Street. A parking permit will be available on this website one week prior to your orientation date.

    Disability Accommodations: New Student Initiatives wants to ensure that students and their families with disabilities are able to fully participate in Orientation. Please indicate your accommodation needs during the sign up process or be re-access your account. You may also email us at orientation@unr.edu your specific request. Students are also encouraged to contact the Disability Resource Center (775/784-6000) prior to Orientation so you may schedule a meeting time while on campus.
