Personal Safety

  • If you know you are going to be studying/ working late on campus, plan ahead as to how you get home safely (e.g., carpool, use Campus Escort Service).
  • Don’t distract yourself with music players or cell phones while walking at night.
  • Remember to lock doors and windows.

Worplace/Classroom Violence

  • Call 911.
  • If possible, leave the area.
  • Close and lock doors and windows.
  • Seek shelter in an inconspicuous location such as a closet or under a desk.


  • Activate a fire alarm and/or call 911.
  • Close all windows and doors and walk to the nearest exit.
  • Exit the building using the stairs and not the elevator.

Menacing or Criminal Behavior

  • If you encounter a potentially dangerous person, call 911.
  • If possible, leave the area.
  • Alert others in the area to the situation.

Building Evacuation

  • Close all windows and doors and walk to the nearest exit.
  • Alert others as you exit the building.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Go to a location at least 100 feet from the building.

Hazardous Material Release

  • Stop the release if safe to do so. Warn others in immediate area.
  • Check yourself (and then others) for exposure: use eyewash/safety shower and undress as necessary.
  • Call Environmental Health & Safety 327-5040 and 911(in case of fire or personal injury).
  • Isolate the contaminated area by limiting access.
  • Leave the immediate area.

Thunderstorm or Flood

  • During a storm, seek shelter indoors away from windows.
  • Do not go outside until the storm passes.
  • If major flooding from a storm or broken pipe occurs, call Facilities Services (775) 784-8020.

Personal Injury or Medical Emergency

  • Call 911
  • Do not move the victim unless necessary.
  • Report injuries to your department.
  • Call National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800) 273-TALK.


  • Duck, cover and hold: Take shelter under a desk, table, in a doorway or similar place.
  • After the earthquake, gather personal belongings and evacuate the building.
  • Report any safety hazards to emergency personnel.

Power/Natural Gas

  • If you experience a power outage, notify Facilities Management: (775) 784-8020.
  • If you suspect a natural gas leak, notify Facilities Services: (775) 784-8020.
  • If evacuation is necessary, exit the building using the stairs.
