Outreach teaching, outreach research and outreach service engage the University with external constituencies and connect university knowledge and resources with the public and private sectors in order to address critical societal issues and contribute to the public good. Effective engagement arises when members of the university community extend and adapt their activities to benefit many external constituencies- including youth, adults, governments’, schools, businesses, foundations, think tanks, social agencies, and non-profit organizations. Outreach programs should be designed, implemented, measured, and assessed with the enthusiastic support of the audiences they serve to ensure programs are responsive to mutually determined priorities, ones that match institutional expertise with community needs.
Outreach activities should be meaningful to and respectful of these various communities. It requires university citizens (students, staff and faculty) to focus beyond the University’s walls, confer with stakeholders about how best to apply their knowledge and skills to help solve community challenges, and integrate on-campus and off-campus activities. Outreach to external constituencies can enlarge opportunities for both faculty and students to access learning, research, and internship opportunities in communities and organizations. It demonstrates the value of lifelong learning and builds a culture to encourage lifelong learning, both within the academy and in the society as a whole.
The final selection is determined by the Awards and Recognition Committee upon review of the nomination letter, a CV/resume, and nominee's statement.
