Summary
I am delighted to be working at the University of Nevada, Reno. The faculty, staff and students whom I am privileged to work with and learn from help create a rich environment of open inquiry and intellectual and social stimulation. I also feel grateful to be an educator and counselor. Few professions offer both the challenges and the rewards that education holds. Few offer comparable opportunities to truly make a difference in the lives of others. What is most exciting to me is that we are in a time where with strategic action in educator preparation, we can make real movement in the necessary philosophical and structural shifts to a truly clinical profession, much like what nursing and counseling have done.
Much of Coll's career and research have focused on educational psychology and counseling, specialties that overlap with student development at all levels from pre-kindergarten through higher education. Coll spent nearly a decade working as a counselor in higher education settings early in his career before joining the University of Wyoming, followed by Boise State University, where he coordinated the Educational Psychology and Counseling Programs and directed the Chemical Abuse Resource Centers.
The author of roughly 60 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, Coll has held millions in grants and contracts to-date. His research has primarily been on school and mental health risk and resilience factors and effective assessment and counseling interventions with struggling adolescent populations. Coll has received a number of awards for his research.
