Summer Invitational

Our Invitational Summer Institute (ISI)

Every year since 1982, the NNWP has offered an Invitational Summer Institute (ISI) to teachers. The ISI is the heart of the Writing Project and is based on the core values of the National Writing Project: teachers who teach writing must practice writing, teachers are the agents of change, and teachers learn best from other teachers. The ISI is often described as not just a class that changes the way people approach the teaching of writing in their classroom, but a class that changes their whole view of teaching and learning in general and the role of both student and teacher within the classroom setting. It is one of the most powerful professional development opportunities available and has successfully followed a very simple model since its inception in 1976.

Maureen McBride, who took the ISI in 2004, and Kim Cuevas, who took the ISI in 1999, direct the Northern Nevada Writing Project and facilitate the Invitational Summer Institute.
