Endorsement to Teach Advanced Computer Science

The nationwide push to prepare our youth for tomorrow's jobs has led to an increased need for educators that are qualified to teach computer science.  The State of Nevada will soon require every high school to offer at least one year-long course in the field of computer science.

Along with two programming courses, the State requires a computer science concepts course and a computer science methods course to obtain the Endorsement to Teach Advanced Computer Science.  The University of Nevada, Reno is proud to now offer both courses to educators. These online courses can be completed as part of the endorsement and/or as part of the Master of Secondary Education Program at the University of Nevada, Reno.  The computer science concepts course is also an exciting opportunity for elementary educators to receive valuable professional development in this growing field.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that demand for software developers is expected to grow 22% through 2029. Our schools need teachers with the CS endorsement now more than ever to help fill a growing void. In addition, passionate computer science teachers are the resources that districts need to fulfill growing state demands for increases in CS education for K-12 students.

Endorsement to Teach Advanced Computer Science in the State of Nevada requirements:

  • A Secondary Education License
  • Computer Science Concepts Course (3 credits)
  • Computer Science Methods Course (3 credits)
  • 6 credits of course work in computer programming
