Cody Remaklus teaches applied lessons in World Percussion and The Feldenkrais Method and directs the UNR World Percussion Ensemble. As a percussionist and hybrid drum set player he has also studied and performed different forms of drumming and dance from Cuba, Africa, Brazil, India and more. He holds a BA from UNR in Spanish and an MFA in World Music Performance from California Institute of the Arts.
Cody began playing music professionally 18 years ago and has since toured the US, Latin America and Europe playing in several different groups. For example, he performed as a dancer in the Los Angeles based group Zadonu, a professional dance and drum ensemble created by Kobla Ladzekpo and dedicated to celebrating the traditional music of the Ewe people of Ghana. Since his first trip to Cuba to study Afro-Cuban folkloric music in 1997 he has continued to immerse himself when it comes to world music. Cody just returned from a month long trip to Brazil where he visited several different cities and studied with more than a few of its musical innovators.
In addition to traveling in order to better understand music-making he explores the physical nature of performance also. Cody is currently working on his practitioner's certification in The Feldenkrais Method and will be offering formal, Awareness Through Movement classes (ATM’s) starting the spring semester of 2015 at UNR.
Cody returned to Reno to teach at UNR and subsequently start a family. He is excited about being a part of what is a flourishing school of music and an active artistic community. In addition to the accessibility and inspiration of the outdoors, he believes there is, 'so much wide open space for the art scene to grow in Washoe County.'
