The Program

Apex Concerts opens its Seventh Season with “Vers l’éternité” - a program tracing its path from
the works of French romantics, through Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc, and culminating at the
apex of French chamber music: the eternal “Quartet for the End of Time” by Olivier Messiaen. A
true monument to human spirit and resilience in the face of agonizing adversities of World War
II, this work will be performed, among others by the violin virtuoso Benjamin Beilman, the
enchantress of the clarinet, Romie de Guise-Langlois, as well as distinguished University faculty
members.

Romie De Guise-Langlois, clarinet

Praised as “extraordinary” and “a formidable clarinetist” by The New York Times, Romie de Guise-Langlois has appeared as soloist and chamber musician on major concert stages throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. She has performed as soloist with the Houston Symphony, the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Ensemble ACJW, the Yale Philharmonia, McGill University Symphony Orchestra, at Music@Menlo, and the Banff Center for the Arts. She won Astral Artists’ 2011 National Auditions and was awarded First Prize in the 2009 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition. She also captured the top prize in the Woolsey Hall Competition at Yale University, the McGill University Classical Concerto Competition, and the Canadian Music Competition, and was the recipient of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation award. Ms. de Guise-Langlois is a Yamaha Artist and her performances have been broadcast on WNYC, WFMT, WQXR, Houston Public Radio, Vermont Public Radio, and across Canada on Radio-Canada.

An avid chamber musician, Ms. de Guise-Langlois joined the roster of Chamber Music Society Two in 2012. She spent recent summers at the Marlboro Music Festival and toured with Musicians from Marlboro. She has appeared on the concert series of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Northwest, Boston Chamber Music Society, Astral Artists, Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Royal Conservatory, Ravinia Festival, the 92nd Street Y, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, and the Salt Bay Chamberfest.

Ms. de Guise-Langlois is the founding member of the Pivot Chamber Soloists, Atria Ensemble, and Sospiro Winds. As part of her chamber music ensembles, she received First Prize at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition and the Silver Medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association. Ms. de Guise-Langlois has collaborated with such distinguished artists as Mitsuko Uchida, Yo-Yo Ma, Jeremy Denk, David Shifrin, Peter Wiley, Scott St. John, Viviane Hagner, Larry Combs, Tara O’Connor, and the Silk Road Ensemble. She has performed as principal clarinetist for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the New Haven and Stamford symphony orchestras, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and The Knights Chamber Orchestra.

A devoted educator, Ms. de Guise-Langlois engages communities as a clarinet professor, performer, and teaching artist. She has given masterclasses in Asia, Canada, and the U.S. and has been on the faculty of Kean University and the Colorado College Summer Music Festival. She was recently part of the Musical Connections program of Carnegie Hall and presently serves as an Adjunct Professor of clarinet at Montclair State University and as the Interim Studio Clarinettist at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

A native of Montreal, Romie de Guise-Langlois received a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University. She also holds a Master of Music degree, supported by the Canada Council of Arts, and an Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music, where she received the Nyfenger Memorial Prize for excellence in woodwind playing. Her principal teachers include David Shifrin, Michael Dumouchel, and André Moisan. Ms. de Guise-Langlois recently completed her fellowship at The Academy – A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute.

Benjamin Beilman, violin

Twenty-six year old American violinist Benjamin Beilman is recognized as one of the fastest rising stars of his generation, winning praise in both North America and Europe for his passionate performances and deep rich tone which the Washington Post called “mightily impressive” and The New York Times described as “muscular with a glint of violence.” The Times also praised his “handsome technique, burnished sound, and quiet confidence [which] showed why he has come so far so fast.” Following his performance of the Sibelius Concerto at the Montreal Competition, the Strad described his performance of the slow movement as “pure poetry.”

In the 16-17 season, Mr. Beilman returns to the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with Yannick Nézet-Séguin in subscription, and on tour with the orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He also appears as soloist on the Chicago Symphony’s new music series, and performs with the Symphony orchestras of Detroit, San Diego, Atlanta, and Grand Rapids, as well as making recital debuts in San Francisco and Vancouver. Abroad, Mr. Beilman makes his debuts with the City of Birmingham Symphony, and at the Dvorak Festival in Prague; he also returns to London’s Wigmore Hall, and appears in recital on a ten-city tour of Australia – including debut appearances in Sydney and Melbourne. In March 2016, Warner Classics released his debut recital CD of works by Schubert, Janacek, and Stravinsky. Highlights last season include his debut with Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony and the world premiere of a new concerto written for him by Edmund Finnis with the London Contemporary Orchestra. He also returned to Europe to play Beethoven with the London Chamber Orchestra at Cadogan Hall, and for recitals at the Louvre, and the Wigmore Hall, as well as at the Verbier and Aix-en-Provence Festivals.

In recent seasons, Mr. Beilman has appeared in subscription with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and returned to play with them at the Bravo! Vail Valley Festival, and, last Summer, at Saratoga. He also made his debut in recital at the Berlin Philharmonie, and appeared with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and with Orchestra St. Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall. He has recently appeared both in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium with the New York Youth Symphony and Weill Hall, for his recital debut, in a program that included the premiere of a new work by David Ludwig commissioned for him by Carnegie Hall. Mr. Beilman also previously performed with the Basel Symphony, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Eugene Symphony, and Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra. Abroad, Mr. Beilman has appeared as soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich and Sir Neville Marriner, with l’Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and with the Malaysian Philharmonic and Hans Graf. He has also appeared in recital internationally at the Louvre, Tonhalle Zürich, Wigmore Hall, and Festpiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Mr. Beilman is a frequent guest artist at festivals including at Music@Menlo, Music from Angel Fire, and Chamber Music Northwest as well as at the Bridgehampton, Marlboro, Santa Fe, Seattle, and Sedona Chamber Music Festivals. Mr. Beilman collaborates abroad at the Kronberg Academy in Frankfurt, Spectrum Concerts Berlin, the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and at the Young Concert Artists Festivals in Tokyo and Beijing. Mr. Beilman is the recipient of the prestigious 2014 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, a 2012 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and a 2012 London Music Masters Award. In 2010, he won First Prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and First Prize in the 2010 Montréal International Musical Competition. In 2009, he was a winner of Astral Artists’ National Auditions. Beilman recorded Prokofiev’s complete sonata for violin on the Analekta label in 2011.

Mr. Beilman studied with Almita and Roland Vamos at the Music Institute of Chicago, Ida Kavafian and Pamela Frank at the Curtis Institute of Music, and Christian Tetzlaff at the Kronberg Academy. Mr. Beilman plays the “Engleman” Stradivarius from 1709 generously on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.

 

Dmitri Atapine, cello

Dmitri Atapine has been described as a cellist with "brilliant technical chops" (Gramophone), whose playing is "highly impressive throughout" (The Strad.) As a soloist and recitalist, he has appeared on some of the world's foremost stages, including Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Zankel and Weill halls at Carnegie Hall, Chicago Cultural Center, and the National Auditorium of Spain. An avid chamber musician, he has appeared with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and his frequent festival appearances have included Music@Menlo, La Musica Sarasota, Nevada Chamber Music Festival, Cactus Pear Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, and Aix-en-Provence Festival, with performances broadcast on radio and television in Spain, Italy, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South Korea. His multiple awards include top prizes at the Carlos Prieto International, the Florian Ocampo, and the Llanes cello competitions, as well as the Plowman, New England, and Premio Vittorio Gui chamber competitions. His recent engagements have included collaborations with such distinguished musicians as Cho-Liang Lin, Paul Neubauer, Ani and Ida Kavafian, Wu Han, Bruno Giuranna, David Shifrin, and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. His recordings, among them a world premiere of Lowell Liebermann's complete works for cello and piano, can be found on the Naxos, Albany, MSR, Urtext Digital, BlueGriffin and Bridge record labels. Mr. Atapine holds the doctorate degree from Yale School of Music, where he was a student of Aldo Parisot. Born into a family of musicians, his teachers have included Alexander Fedortchenko and Suren Bagratuni. The Artistic Director of Ribadesella Chamber Music Festival and Apex Concerts, he is the cello professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and is a member of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's CMS Two program.

 

Hyeyeon Park, piano

Selected as a ‘2012 Artist of the Year’ by Seoul Art Center, pianist Hyeyeon Park has been described as a pianist ‘with power, precision and tremendous glee’ (Gramophone). Praised for her “very sensitive” (Washington Post) and “highly nuanced” playing (Lucid Culture), she has appeared as soloist and chamber musician on major concert stages throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Japan and her native Korea. Since making her debut at the age of ten performing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto with Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Park has been a soloist with Seoul Philharmonic, KNUA Chamber Orchestra, Gangnam Symphony Orchestra and Incheon Philharmonic to name a few. Her recent concerts have been presented at the Dame Myra Hess Recital Series in Chicago, the Trinity Wall Street Series in NYC, Philips Collection in Washington DC among others, leading her to venues such as Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Recital Hall, Kennedy Center and Seoul Art Center, to name a few.

Selected as “The Most Promising Young Artist” by Korean Ministry of Education, after winning the first prize at Chosun National Competition, Ms. Park garnered top prizes in numerous international competitions as well, including Oberlin International Piano Competition, Ettlingen International Piano Competition (Germany), Hugo Kauder International Piano Competition, Maria Canals International Piano Competition (Spain), Prix Amadeo International Piano Competition (Germany), and Corpus Christi International Music Competition. Her performances have been broadcast on KBS and EBS television in Korea, RAI3 (Italy), WQXR (New York), WFMT (Chicago), WBJC (Baltimore), WETA (Washington DC), radio and channel LOOP in the States.

An avid chamber musician, Ms. Park has collaborated with such luminaries as David Shifrin, Ani Kavarian, Ida Kavafian, Paul Neubauer,  Toby Appel, and Derek Han and many others appearing at Yellow Barn Festival, Santander Music Festival (Spain), Music@Menlo Festival and Chamber Music Northwest. She is the founding member of Atapine-Park duo and Atria Ensemble, groups that respectively won the prizes at Premio Vittorio Gui International Chamber Music Competition (Italy) and Plowman Chamber Music Competition. Her duo recordings for cello and piano with cellist Dmitri Atapine were distributed by Naxos to great critical acclaim. An advocate of new music, as a passionate musician who pursued career as a composer as well, Ms. Park enjoys working closely with the living composers, recently premiering a work by Patrick Castillo, and soon to collaborate on a project with Ezra Laderman.

Ms. Park holds a Bachelor of Music degree at Korean National University with Prof. Daejin Kim, a Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music with Prof. Peter Frankl and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Peabody Conservatory with Prof. Yong Hi Moon. The co-artistic director of Apex Concerts, Ms. Park is the piano professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and co-directs Apex Concerts at UNR. She can be heard on Blue Griffin, Urtext Digital, HM and Naxos labels.

 

James Winn, piano

James Winn, piano and composition professor at the University of Nevada, Reno since 1997, made his professional debut with the Denver Symphony at the age of thirteen, and has been performing widely in North America, Europe, and Asia ever since. With his duo-piano partner, Cameron Grant, he was a recipient of the top prize given in the two-piano category of the 1980 Munich Competition (Musical America wrote about the team “Not since Josef and Rosina Lhevinne regaled us in the thirties have we heard such technical prowess paired with such genuine musical values”). Dr. Winn has been a solo pianist with the New York City Ballet, a member of the New York New Music Ensemble, of Hexagon (woodwind quintet plus piano), and the pianist and resident composer of the Telluride Chamber Music Festival, as well as a frequent guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Speculum, the Washington Square Contemporary Music Series, the Chamber Music Society of Sacramento, the Group for Contemporary Music, Cactus Pear Chamber Music Festival, La Musica International Chamber Music Festival, and Bargemusic. Well-known as a specialist in new music, he has been involved in numerous world premieres and premiere recordings by many renowned composers, among them 13 Pulitzer Prize winners. He is currently a member of Argenta, UNR’s resident piano trio, and performs regularly in recital with internationally acclaimed New York based violinist Rolf Schulte. An active recording artist, Winn is featured in more than three dozen CDs as soloist, chamber musician, and composer. Dr. Winn’s compositions have been performed internationally. He has received numerous career recognitions including an Artist Fellowship from the Nevada State Council of the Arts and, in 2009, the Governor’s Award.
