Assistant Professor, Jazz Trumpet, Small Groups, University jazz Ensemble #1

Ralph Alessi is a trumpeter and composer who is an Assistant Professor teaching jazz trumpet and director of the University Jazz Ensemble #1. He has performed and recorded with the likes of Fred Hersch, Ravi Coltrane, Sam Rivers, Uri Caine and Steve Coleman and is currently an ECM recording artist. As an educator, Alessi has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and is currently the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music (www.schoolforimprov.org).

Director and Conductor, University Symphony Orchestra

Dr. Altieri is currently the Director of Orchestras at the University of Nevada and Assistant Conductor for the Reno Philharmonic where his duties include the music directorship of the youth orchestra program. In addition, he has been the Music Director of The New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra since 2003 and has led them on several tours throughout the United States.

Artistic Director, Apex Concerts

Cellist Dmitri Atapine, the First Prize winner at the 2004 Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition (Mexico), is recognized as an exciting performer and an accomplished chamber musician. Currently Mr. Atapine is the cello professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is a member of the faculty Argenta Trio. Since 2007 he serves as the Artistic Director of Ribadesella International Music Festival (Spain) and since 2010 he is the founder and Artistic Director of Apex Concerts.

Director, Jazz and Improvisational Music

Adam Benjamin is a Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed pianist, keyboardist, composer and writer based in New Orleans. Recognized as a “Rising Star in Jazz” in DownBeat magazine’s critic’s and reader’s polls for six years running, his unmistakable sound crosses stylistic boundaries and challenges traditional notions of jazz. Adam maintains a humble and humorous approach that connects him with his audiences worldwide. Adam teaches jazz piano for the Department of Music at UNR.

Joey Berger

Joey Berger

Guitar

Joey Berger teaches guitar for the Department of Music at UNR. Joey is the guitarist for the University of Nevada, Reno's Faculty Jazz Quintet, and is also the guitarist for the rhythm section of the Reno Jazz Orchestra, Northern Nevada's premier 17 piece big band jazz ensemble. Joey also plays with various jazz configurations in the Reno, Lake Tahoe area.

Keyboard Technician, Piano Tuner

Robert Callaghan is the piano technician for the Department of Music and has been a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) for nearly 30 years. In 1980 Robert completed a course in Piano Technology at New England Conservatory under Frank Hanson, who was then the Piano Technician for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Robert tunes all Department of Music pianos, including the Steinway concert grand pianos in Nightingale Concert Hall.

R. Reed Chamberlin serves as Director of Academic Bands at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he conducts the UNR Wind Ensemble, teaches conducting, and guides the concert band program. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music where he was the Assistant Conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, a Fennell Conducting Fellow, and recipient of the Walter Hagen Prize in Conducting.

Ed Corey has taught music at the postsecondary level for 18 years and is currently instructor of guitar and guitar ensemble director at the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of New Hampshire, Durham and received his master's degree from California State University, Sacramento.  Ed has performed for 35 years as a jazz guitarist throughout the country, and presently performs in the Reno/Tahoe area with his own jazz guitar group, The Ed Corey Trio.

DeAunn Davis

DeAunn Davis teaches horn at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Prior to living in Reno, DeAunn earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.  She has performed extensively in the Chicago-land area and was a founding member of the critically-acclaimed experimental chamber group Fifth House Ensemble.  DeAunn was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago while earning her Bachelor of Music degree at Northwestern University, and earned her Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

Sara DePaoli

Sara DePaoli

Music Therapy

Sara DePaoli holds a performance degree from Bemidji State University (BA) and a music therapy degree from the University of Minnesota (MA).She completed her music therapy internship at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, OH and worked as a music therapist at University of Minnesota Fairview Medical Center, American Cancer Society, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Note-Able Music Therapy Services.

Ms. DePaoli is the Executive Director of the Musculoskeletal Organization for Research and Education and holds her own private practice in music therapy. She has given clinics and presentations on music therapy and non-profit management at a range of conferences and has been published for her research in acute mental health and bone marrow transplant.

Ms. DePaoli teaches two introductory courses in music therapy in the University of Nevada Department of Music and mentors students interested in the field of music therapy. Direct your questions to Ms. DePaoli.

Larry M. Engstrom

Dr. Larry M. Engstrom currently teaches Jazz Survey, serves as the advisor for music minors and BA-music majors, and is chairing the School of the Arts University Arts Building Committee. He served as Director of the School of the Arts from its inception in 2004 to 2011 and again from 2013 through June 2017. He was Chair of the Department of Music and Dance from 2000 – 2003, Director of Jazz Studies from 1989 – 2000, and Director of the Reno Jazz Festival from 1991-2015.

Peter Epstein

Peter Epstein

Peter Epstein began his career in 1984 in Portland, Oregon. After several years apprenticing with many of the region’s top jazz artists, he relocated to Los Angeles, California to study jazz saxophone and various world music genres at California Institute of the Arts. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from CalArts in 1992 he moved to Brooklyn, New York and has since appeared on more than 50 recordings and toured in 20-plus countries. He is Chair of the Department of Music and Associate Professor, Saxophone, Jazz and Improvisational Music.

Hans Halt holds his Bachelor and Master degrees from UNR and is a full time instructor of bass and jazz studies at the university. Julianne Lindberg

Julianne Lindberg

Assistant Professor, Musicology, Music History

Julianne Lindberg is currently an assistant professor of musicology in the Department of Music. Her research interests include music in Europe and the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century, and the intersections between gender, ethnicity, class, and children’s culture. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from UCLA, with a dissertation that explored the “childlike” in French music at the fin de siècle, particularly the work of Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, and Satie.

Ruthie Meadows is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at UNR. Her research focuses on poetics and aurality in the Hispanophone- and circum-Caribbean, including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and New Orleans. Isadora Pastragus began her piano studies at age 4 in her native Romania and earned a Diplôme Supérieur (Doctural Studies) in piano performance from Royal Conservatory of Music (Brussels, Belgium), an Artist Diploma from Oberlin Conservatory and Master of Music in Piano Performance from Rice University. Currently, Mrs Pastragus serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Music Department of University of Nevada Reno where she teaches piano and provides vocal and instrumental coaching.

Kate Pollard, the music education lecturer at UNR, holds music education degrees from the University of Delaware (BM) and Ithaca College (MM). Prior to moving to the Reno area, Ms. Pollard attended the University of Washington's music education PhD program while acting as the University Supervisor for music student teachers. Her doctoral dissertation, currently in progress, is about successful mentoring relationships between music student teachers and their mentor teachers.

Cody Remaklus teaches applied lessons in World Percussion and The Feldenkrais Method and directs the UNR World Percussion Ensemble. As a percussionist and hybrid drum set player he has also studied and performed different forms of drumming and dance from Cuba, Africa, Brazil, India and more.
