Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be the chair of an outstanding department in the College of Engineering. Our department offers a broad fundamental education that emphasizes the creative and analytical skills necessary to advance and protect the world's infrastructure and the environment. We strive for and pursue excellence in all aspects of civil and environmental engineering education and research. We are recognized regionally and nationally for the quality and impact of our research and research-based teaching.
We offer our students a variety of courses of study developed by faculty with international reputations. Our students join outstanding undergraduate and graduate groups made up of individuals from diverse cultural and ethnic background. Our graduate program is consistently ranked among the top 50 programs, according to U.S. News and World Report. The department has four focus areas:
- Infrastructure resilience for extreme loading
- Water and environmental sustainability
- Pavement materials and pavement-soil Interaction
- Intelligent transportation systems
As the nation's existing infrastructure expands to meet the growing needs of the society, civil and environmental engineers will remain at the forefront in contributing to the renewal of the built environment. Our engineers are involved with the physical environment through the planning, design and construction of infrastructure systems and environmental systems for the protection and use of water resources.
I invite and welcome you to browse our website and explore some of the ongoing faculty-led research projects that address many of the complex problems that are associated with the development of our infrastructure and the environment.
