Academic (non-athletic) brands

Block N logo

University of Nevada, Reno's Block N logo features a custom-designed collegiate serif "N" surrounded by a perfect square. This logo is the core element of the University's official academic (versus athletic) brand.

It should appear on the front of all University marketing communications and at the top of every University webpage. It should also appear on University social media profiles. It may stand alone without logotype in situations where the viewer understands it represents the University of Nevada, Reno. It may also stand alone when complete identification is not essential, such as on t-shirts or office supplies.

The logo should never be altered in any way, including stretching, shadowing, beveling, changing the proportions or altering the colors. To achieve this, it may be necessary for print pieces to be produced in two colors.

University signature and identifiers

A signature is a logo mark plus a logotype. The Block N logo is the University's logo mark. The University's logotype is "University of Nevada, Reno." Combined, they are the University's main signature.

College, unit and department identifiers often feature the University's signature.

The logotype for the University's signature and for college, unit and department identifiers is set in Myriad Pro with custom tracking. The logotype should never be recreated. Instead, use the original logo artwork posted below or on unr.edu/brand.

The University signature is a federally registered trademark and should never be altered in any way— not stretched, condensed, distorted, made transparent, rearranged, beveled, skewed, tilted, drop-shadowed or color-changed. Common mistakes include:

  • outlining the logo
  • using low-resolution logos
  • changing the logo's colors
  • adding other colors to the logo
  • reversing the color scheme of the logo
  • shrinking the size of the box around the logo
  • using the N outside of its box (except Alumni Relations)
  • rearranging or moving the elements of the logo
  • making the logo part of a word or headline
  • placing words or images over the logo
  • positioning the logo vertically
  • tilting the logo
Alumni Association signature

The Nevada Alumni Association uses a logo that is different than, but related to, the University's Block N logo. The Alumni Association’s logo may only be used with express written permission from the Nevada Alumni Association.

Program, project or event identifiers

It is human nature to want to "brand" new programs, projects, events, etc. by creating an illustrative logo for them. Please resist the temptation to do this. These secondary logos often conflict with and dilute the University brand, and creating new illustrative logos runs counter to the guidelines in the University Administrative Manual.

The solution is to request a typography-only wordmark or logotype that uses the University’s official Myriad Pro typeface. Examples are shown below.

Presidential seal

The President of the University of Nevada, Reno is the official custodian of the University seal. All usage of the seal must be approved by the Office of the President. Use of the University seal is reserved for formal and official documents, such as diplomas, certificates, official records and student transcripts. Use of the seal may be permitted on certain licensed commercial products if approved by the Office of the President.

The seal should not be used as a background image on websites and publications, or embroidered on apparel.

A note about the use of the seal on certificates: The seal should only be used on certificates signed by the President. All certificates signed by the President require approval of the President’s office and should be arranged in advance.

Logo, signature and identifier colors

The University signature can be produced in four-color process (CMYK), two PANTONE® colors, blue-and-white, black-and-white and grayscale.

There are two versions of the Block N logo, a positive version for use on white backgrounds and a reversed version for use on dark or non-white backgrounds. In both versions, the primary color of the N in the Block N logo is white. In formal or elaborate designs, the N can be gray or silver. Also in both versions, the N is always contained in a perfect square. In color designs, the square is dark blue. In black-and-white or grayscale designs, the square is black.

The reversed version features a thin white line, or stroke, on the outside of the square surrounding the N. The stroke on the square is 1/2 the width of the stroke on the N. This stroke makes the square around the N easy to see.

Logo, signature and identifier clear space

Clear space is the protected area all of the way around a logo, signature or identifier that maximizes its impact. The clear space around a logo, signature or identifier is porportional to its size and should measure 1/2 the height of the Block N.

This space must be kept free of all other graphics and text. Photos can be placed behind the logo; however, you may need to use a reversed version of the logo or add a drop shadow to the logotype (the words only, not the Block N) to ensure legibility.

Logo, signature and identifier size

Logos and logotypes lose their effectiveness when they fall below minimum sizes. For this reason, we recommend the guidelines below when creating designs and artwork.

  • Stand alone Block N:The Block N should be no smaller than 0.25 inches tall.
  • Signature or identifier (Block N with logotype): The Block N should be no smaller than 0.75 inches tall.

Downloading University Logos

Below are horizontal and vertical positive and reversed logos in PNG, JPG and EPS file formats.

The PNG files are ideal for use in many common software programs like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Publisher. The PNG files are also commonly used for web projects requiring the logo to be placed on another color field.

The JPG files are for social media profiles.

The EPS files are vector Adobe Illustrator files. They are infinitely scalable, giving you maximum flexibility. Large posters and banners and swag items such as t-shirts, mugs and other giveaways should use vector logos.
