Speech Pathology and Audiology

  • Speech Pathology B.S.

    Mission Statement

    To provide a foundation in communication sciences and disorders in preparation for graduate studies.

    Student Learning Outcomes

    1. Students will have an entry-level understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Students will identify anatomical structures of the speech and hearing mechanism.
    • Students will identify that anatomical and physiological bases for human communication

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of C+ or better in SPA 330
    • Earn a grade of C+ or better in SPA 362

    2. Students will have an entry-level understanding of the normal processes of speech and language development.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Students will identify and describe developmental milestones for speech and language acquisition and development.
    • Students will apply understanding of language processes to assessment of normal speech and language functioning.

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of C+ or better in SPA 340.
    • Earn a grade of C+ or better in SPA 364.

    3. Students will have an entry-level understanding of diagnostic and treatment methods in Communication Disorders.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Students will identify issues related to reliability and validity of assessment instruments and be able to administer and interpret various assessment instruments.
    • Students will develop diagnostic summaries and treatment plans based on assessment findings.

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of C+ or better in SPA 400.
    • Earn a grade of C+ or better in SPA467 (capstone).
  • Speech Pathology and Audiology M.S.

    Mission Statement

    To prepare graduate students for professional careers in speech-language pathology.

    Student Learning Outcomes

    1. Students will apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism to communication disorders.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Successfully evaluate/treat patients with communication disorders having a physiological basis.
    • Successfully complete hearing evaluations of patients.
    • Successfully evaluate patients in Craniofacial Clinic.
    • Successfully evaluate/treat patients in voice clinic.

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 754 and SPA 755.
    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 464/664
    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 721.
    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 762.

    2. Students will demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of major communication disorders.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Students will identify and describe developmental milestones for speech and language acquisition.
    • Students will describe various theoretical bases for communication disorders.
    • Students will describe diagnostic and treatment methods for major communication disorders.

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 667 and SPA 723
    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 757.
    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 660/661 and SPA 752.

    3. Students will apply knowledge of communication disorders to clinical situation.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Students will evaluate and treat patients with communication disorders in the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic.
    • Students will evaluate and treat patients with communication disorders in clinical settings outside of the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic.
    • Students will complete at least 250 clock hours of clinical experience under faculty supervision.
    • Students will complete at least 50 clock hours of supervised clinical experience in each of two types of off-campus clinical settings.

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 759.
    • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 767.
    • Students will keep a log of clinical contacts at the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic. The log will be verified by having the appropriate supervisor sign each entry. Each semester the log will be given to the Clinic Director to record on the student's master account.
    • Students will keep a log of clinical contacts at each of two off-campus facilities. The off-campus supervisors will verify each entry on the log and the hours will be recorded by the Clinic Director at UNR.

    4. Students will demonstrate entry-level professional knowledge of breadth and depth of the discipline of speech pathology.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Students will take the standardized national examination in speech-language pathology.
    • Students will write comprehensive examinations at the end of their program of study.

    Assessment Method

    • Obtain a passing score on the national examination.
    • Students will pass comprehensive examination based on the evaluation of the examining committee.
  • Speech Pathology Ph.D.

    Mission Statement

    To train doctoral level professionals capable of functioning as knowledge generators in institutions of higher learning. Graduates should be competent teachers, clinicians, and researchers.

    Student Learning Outcomes

    1. Student will demonstrate ability to guide graduate student clinical experiences.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Schedule, observe, and provide feedback to students working with patients in the UNR Speech Clinic.
    • Facilitated growth in student confidence, clinical skills, and independent thinking.

    Assessment Method

    • A grade of at least B+ in SPA 791 Experiences in Classroom and Clinical Teaching.
    • Student evaluations averaging at least 4.0 on a five point scale from student learners.

    2. Student will demonstrate ability to develop and teach area-specific course in communication disorders.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Develop syllabi and appropriate rubrics for sequencing and delivering learning materials to learners.
    • Present theoretical constructs and their practical applications.

    Assessment Method

    • Earn a grade of "S" in GRAD 701.
    • Earn a grade of at least B+ in SPA 791.

    3. Demonstrate ability to independently evaluate, conceptualize, and execute empirical research.

    Student Performance Indicators

    • Create original research that contributes to the knowledge base in communication disorders.
    • Appropriately apply statistical methods to research questions.
    • Generate critical analyses and syntheses of existing research.
    • Formulate and critically evaluate research questions and methodologies.

    Assessment Method

    • Successful defense of doctoral dissertation.
    • Earn at least a B+ in PSY 706 and CEP 740.
    • Earn a grade of at least B+ in SPA 790 Research Design.
    • Earn a grade of at least B+ in SPA 790.
