Mission Statement

To prepare graduate students for professional careers in speech-language pathology.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Students will apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism to communication disorders.

Student Performance Indicators
  • Successfully evaluate/treat patients with communication disorders having a physiological basis.
  • Successfully complete hearing evaluations of patients.
  • Successfully evaluate patients in Craniofacial Clinic.
  • Successfully evaluate/treat patients in voice clinic.
Assessment Method
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 754 and SPA 755.
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 464/664
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 721.
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 762.

2. Students will demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of major communication disorders.

Student Performance Indicators
  • Students will identify and describe developmental milestones for speech and language acquisition.
  • Students will describe various theoretical bases for communication disorders.
  • Students will describe diagnostic and treatment methods for major communication disorders.
Assessment Method
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 667 and SPA 723
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 757.
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 660/661 and SPA 752.

3. Students will apply knowledge of communication disorders to clinical situation.

Student Performance Indicators
  • Students will evaluate and treat patients with communication disorders in the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic.
  • Students will evaluate and treat patients with communication disorders in clinical settings outside of the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic.
  • Students will complete at least 250 clock hours of clinical experience under faculty supervision.
  • Students will complete at least 50 clock hours of supervised clinical experience in each of two types of off-campus clinical settings.
Assessment Method
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 759.
  • Earn a grade of B or better in SPA 767.
  • Students will keep a log of clinical contacts at the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic. The log will be verified by having the appropriate supervisor sign each entry. Each semester the log will be given to the Clinic Director to record on the student's master account.
  • Students will keep a log of clinical contacts at each of two off-campus facilities. The off-campus supervisors will verify each entry on the log and the hours will be recorded by the Clinic Director at UNR.

4. Students will demonstrate entry-level professional knowledge of breadth and depth of the discipline of speech pathology.

Student Performance Indicators
  • Students will take the standardized national examination in speech-language pathology.
  • Students will write comprehensive examinations at the end of their program of study.
Assessment Method
  • Obtain a passing score on the national examination.
  • Students will pass comprehensive examination based on the evaluation of the examining committee.
