Each US state maintains a list of the biggest trees of each species in that state. These individual trees are called State Champion Trees. There are also co-champion trees for trees that are tied, and "up-and-coming" trees for young trees. Because the UNR campus has planted trees for more than 100 years and has actively sought to plant a diversity of species, the university has a lot of champion trees--30 state champions, 5 co-champions, and 7 up-and-coming trees.
