Application Process for Individuals Considering the UNR Dietetic Internship Program

The UNR IP seeks candidates who are focused and are capable of working with some degree of independence in a fast-paced environment. Candidates are screened and evaluated based on GPA. We currently have no minimum requirements, however applicants selected for the program typically have a minimum GPA of 3.2 Work or volunteer experience in the nutrition field is important and an average of one year of relevant work/volunteer experience is recommended. Students selected for the program must demonstrate recent experience and coursework at least equivalent to that required by ACEND.

D & D Digital Systems
All applicants to UNR IP must participate in computer matching.
Applicants should request instructions and a mark/sense card (http://www.dnddigital.com/ada/adaform.pdf) to prioritize their Dietetic Internship preferences. This material is available from D & D Digital Systems (www.dnddigital.com/ada/index.php). You may register online by paying the $50 Registration Fee by a VISA/MASTERCARD credit card (with a USA billing address). You will then receive a username and password after payment is completed, that will allow online access or mail your mark/sense card. You may also mail your mark/sense card and $50 Registration Fee to D& D Digital Systems.

DICAS Application
The UNR IP accepts applications submitted through the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS) https://portal.dicas.org (email: DICASinfo@DICAS.org ) by the UNR Dietetic Internship Program Application Deadline Dates.  The fee to use DICAS is $40 for the first application submitted and $20 for each additional application.

UNR DI Supplemental Application

Please complete and submit the Supplemental Application Form along with the $50 application fee to the address provided on the form. Both the DICAS online application and the supplemental application must be completed by the UNR Dietetic Internship Program Application Deadline Dates.


Personal Statement
Applicants who apply to internships using DICAS will be asked to complete a personal statement in 1,000 words or less. Questions to be addressed in the personal statement may include:

  • Why do you want to enter the dietetics profession?
  • What are some experiences that have helped to prepare you for your career?
  • What are your short‐term and long‐term goals?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses or areas needing improvement?

References
When completing the application form, applicants must include the name and contact information (specifically an e‐mail address) for each reference. This will trigger an e‐mail message requesting completion of a reference form. The form will be completed on‐line. Students submitting more than one application will need to use the same individuals as references for each application.

Once the applications are complete, they are reviewed and evaluated based on the following criteria:

Overall, DPD Science and Professional GPA (goal of >3.0; however transcripts are review to ascertain if unforeseen circumstances impacted academic record).

  • Letter of Application
  • Work or Volunteer Experiences (In food, nutrition, dietetics arena): Clinical/Food/Community
  • Active in Professional Organizations
  • Evidence of Leadership
  • Outside Activities
  • Letters of Reference (DPD Director desirable) and two other references.

An average of 80-85 applications are received and reviewed per application cycle. The top ranked applicants (20-30) are selected based on the above criteria. These applicants are screened further by preceptors involved in the program and 12-15 applicants are selected for and Interview. The UNR IP Director will contact candidates who are selected for an interview. After the completion of interviews, the rankings of applicants are submitted to the D&D matching service in accordance with Academy deadlines.

At the completion of the match, applicants will confirm acceptance of their match to the UNR Dietetic Internship Program per protocol. Karon Felten, UNR Dietetic Internship Director, will work with each intern to complete the program requirements outlined in the Policies and Procedures For Interns Accepted Into the Program .
