Writing Across Contexts is a combination of more traditional writing-across-the-curriculum and writing-in-the-disciplines programs. WAC, here, holds the promise of traditional writing-across-the-curriculum programs by collecting a range of resources for the teaching and learning of writing. It also builds on the strengths of WID programs by recognizing the important differences in the writing done in specific fields, majors, and schools.
Meanwhile, it also extends to other contexts, beyond disciplines and a specific curriculum by engaging with the widest possible array of discourse communities and literate practices. This approach allows the WAC program here at the University to be more aware of changes in writing of all kinds and more agile in responding to them.
The foundational work will be to develop and deploy writing resources for both faculty and students in the disciplines. Beyond that, this program will also work to reach out across language communities among our students, professional writing contexts, digital media, communities in and around Reno, and the many, many genres and modes of writing that current literacies engage.
