FAQ

Is the University Writing Center free?

Yes, our consultations are free as long as you are a student at the University of Nevada, Reno. Every student at the University pays an academic support fee which supports our operations, alongside other supplemental services on campus (Math Center, Tutoring Center, etc).

Where is the University Writing Center located?

During the day, we are located in the Mackay Science Building in Room 108. Mackay Science is on the southeast end of the quad, right next to Morel Hall and the Sara Fleischmann Building. Students coming to the University Writing Center should enter from the north entrance of Mackay Science and go down the stairs.

We also offer evening sessions at the Knowledge Center Sunday through Thursday (4:00pm-9:00pm) in the Knowledge Nook (outside main floor next to the south entrance) and in the @One Computer Lab (on the right side of the room) Sunday through Thursday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Please feel free to call us at 784-6030 if you need additional information.

Do you need to schedule an appointment or does the Writing Center allow for “drop-in” sessions?

The University Writing Center conducts over 2,000 sessions a semester. While we do our best to see every student who drops-in, appointments are recommended. We see our biggest demand during midterms and finals, so plan accordingly.

How long does an appointment at the University Writing Center take?

Depending on the project, students can schedule either a half-hour or an hour session. We recommend that all papers over three pages long be scheduled for an hour session. Many writing projects may require and/or benefit from scheduling multiple sessions with a consultant.

How can I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment by logging onto our website (www.unr.edu/writing-center) and clicking on the "Make an Appointment" link. You will then see the login page for our online scheduler. Returning users can login with their email address and password. First-time users will need to register with our system. Click on the "First Visit?" link on the login page and fill out the registration form.

You can also give us a call at 784-6030, and we can schedule an appointment over the phone for you.

When is the University Writing Center open?

We are open Monday through Thursday in our Mackay Science location from 9:00am-4:00pm and Friday from 9:00am-2:00pm. We hold evening sessions in the Knowledge Center in the Knowledge Nook (outside of main floor next to the south entrance of the building) and in the @One Computer Lab (one the right side of the room) Sunday through Thursday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Our office staff is available at the Mackay Science location from 8:00am-5:00pm to assist with appointment coordination and questions. Please feel free to call us at 784-6030 with any concerns during this time.

What does the University Writing Center help with?

The University Writing Center is a student consultative service that focuses exclusively on student writing. We help students with any writing project they are working on, including non-academic papers and resumes. Students may visit us at any point in the writing process and talk with a consultant about their work.

We are an academic support center that focuses on student writing. Our mission at the Writing Center is to build a community of writers. That being said, we are not a drop off editing service. All students who visit the University Writing Center are expected to participate in the consultation. If you have additional questions regarding these policies, please contact us at 784-6030.

I’m having trouble with an assignment. Is it possible to book an appointment with someone who specializes in a particular subject matter?

Yes. Bios from all of our consultants are posted on our website and on our online scheduler. To view a bio on the schedule, click on an available appointment block on our scheduler. A confirmation window will pop up and you will see a short description of the consultant and their strengths/weaknesses.

If you have additional questions about which consultant would be best for your academic needs, please give us a call at 784-6030, and we will be happy to assist you.
