NWHP member and former newsletter editor (1996) Sylvia Ontaneda-Bernales
recently was awarded the honor of being named as one of the 2008 Maryland’s Top
100 Women. A recognition ceremony and celebration will be held on May 12th in
Baltimore.
In October 2007 she was appointed by Maryland Governor O’Malley to the
Maryland Health
Care Commission. She is a licensed attorney in Maryland and serves
as an Associate at the Baltimore City offices of Ober, Kaler, Grimes & Shriver.
Sylvia earned two degrees in journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno prior to
moving to Maryland where she obtained her Juris Doctor degree from the George
Washington University National Law Center. Her journalistic career encompassed both
the print and broadcast media and included work as freelance feature writer, book and
newsletter editor, literary translator, television producer, documentary producer/director,
and media consultant.
In Nevada, her most outstanding work was the one-hour PBS special “Making a
Difference: A Celebration of Women in Politics,” which first aired in February 1995.
