Recruitment Process:
If a formal search is being conducted then you will see the job posted at: http://jobs.unr.edu
You can review questions and answers for this recruitment process under Academic Administrative.

Hiring Process:
If selected and approved for hire, you will be contacted with an offer. Once you accept the offer, you and the hiring department will arrange a start date. Following are a few things that will help in understanding and considering your offer:

Contracts
Postdoctoral scholar contracts can begin at any point in the year and may not exceed a duration of five years. Contracts are renewed each year on their anniversary date and an increase may be awarded at this time, if funding permits and departmental eligibility criteria are met. This increase may not exceed the highest merit and COLA awarded to any faculty member for the year. Postdocs are ineligible for merit and legislated cost of living increases.
Retirement Contribution
Postdoctoral employees who are hired on a contract of at least 50% are provided with a mandatory defined contribution 403(b) retirement plan commencing on their date of hire. Under the terms of the Retirement Plan employees must contribute 6.2% of their gross salary to the Plan. The employee contributions made to the Plan are before income taxes are calculated. The employer also makes a matching 6.2% contribution. Both the employee and the employer contributions are invested, at the direction of each participant, into a 403(b) account. The employee selects the funding vehicles for investment of their retirement contributions from AIG Valic. The plan provides for immediate vesting.
Paychecks
Faculty payroll is on the last day of each month (1 time per month). If electing direct deposit, keep in mind, the first 1-2 paychecks can be picked up at the Cashier’s Office located on the third floor of the Student Services Building.

Employee Moving Expenses

If an employee is hired into a continuing position for which there is a critical need and which cannot otherwise be filled, and moved from a location which is at least 50 miles from the new location, institutional funds may be used to pay for or reimburse the employee for certain specified moving expenses (pursuant to the State Administrative Manual, sections 0238.0-0252.0)
http://budget.state.nv.us/SAM2002.pdf
The amount of funds is subject to State limits, department budget and details negotiated at time of hire.

1. Relocation travel for the employee and immediate dependent family members
2. Moving of household goods

Note: As the payment or reimbursement of these expenses may create a tax liability, the advice and assistance of a tax attorney or other tax professional should be obtained by the employee.

Social Security
University of Nevada and State of Nevada employees are exempt from contributing to Social Security. Most employees and employers each pay up to 7.65% of covered wages for social security and Medicare taxes. Together these taxes comprise FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act). The social security portion of FICA is 6.2% of your covered wages, up to a maximum wage base of $94,200 in 2006. Social Security will not be deducted from your paycheck. Please consult a tax advisor or the Social Security Administration to determine what the personal consequences of this exemption will mean to you (http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10045.html). The Social Security Protection Act of 2004 requires newly hired public employees to sign a "Statement Concerning Your Employment in a Job Not Covered by Social Security". Form SSA-1945 explains the potential effects of two provisions in the Social Security law on workers whose earnings are not covered under Social Security.

Getting Started on Campus:
Successful onboarding requires the combined efforts of the new employee, their department and the various support units on campus. Recognizing that Nevada employment sites are spread over a large geographic region, some elements of the checklist may require an in-person visit and therefore more time than specified.

The checklist below is designed to help you quickly review information related to benefits and services, job responsibilities and workplace policies and procedures.
