Letter of Appointment:
Job Opportunities

Recruitment Process:
Letter of appointment positions are used for part-time and temporary faculty. They can include emergency hires for teaching and non-teaching positions. As such there is often a short lead time between recruitment and hiring.

If a formal search being conducted then you will see the job posted at http://jobs.unr.edu
You can review questions and answers for this recruitment process under Academic Administrative.

Hiring Process:
If selected and approved for hire, you will be contacted with an offer. Once you accept the offer, you and the hiring department will arrange a start date. Following are a few things that will help in understanding and considering your offer:

Contracts
Letter of appointment contracts can begin at any point in the year. Appointments of less than 50% can be renewed and if funding permits and departmental eligibility criteria are met, an increase may be awarded upon renewal. This increase may not exceed the highest merit and COLA awarded to any faculty member for the year. Letters of appointment are ineligible for merit and legislated cost of living increases.
Retirement Contribution
Letters of appointment at less than 50% are not eligible for benefits. “Letters of Appointment with Benefits” are greater than 50% FTE but less than 80% and have served as a letter of appointment for more than 90 days. These employees are provided with a deferred compensation 457 retirement plan commencing on their date of eligibility. Under the terms of the FICA Alternative Retirement Plan, employees must contribute 7.5% of their gross salary to the Plan. The employee pre-tax contributions are invested into a 457 account. There are two retirement investment fund companies to choose from, ING Financial Services and The Hartford.
Paychecks
Faculty payroll is on the last day of each month (1 time per month). If electing direct deposit, keep in mind, the first 1-2 paychecks can be picked up at the Cashier’s Office located on the third floor of the Student Services Building.

Employee Moving Expenses

Moving expenses are not available for the letter of appointment part-time positions.

Social Security
University of Nevada and State of Nevada employees are exempt from contributing to Social Security. Most employees and employers each pay up to 7.65% of covered wages for social security and Medicare taxes. Together these taxes comprise FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act). The social security portion of FICA is 6.2% of your covered wages, up to a maximum wage base of $94,200 in 2006. Social Security will not be deducted from your paycheck. Please consult a tax advisor or the Social Security Administration to determine what the personal consequences of this exemption will mean to you (http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10045.html). The Social Security Protection Act of 2004 requires newly hired public employees to sign a "Statement Concerning Your Employment in a Job Not Covered by Social Security". Form SSA-1945 explains the potential effects of two provisions in the Social Security law on workers whose earnings are not covered under Social Security.
