Family Friendly
As a focal point for the community, University of Nevada, Reno offers an abundance of life enriching activities for the whole family to enjoy and learn. Achieving a strong work/life balance is important to the institution as evidenced by the commitment of resources to the following programs, and many more.
- Child care programs are offered year-round through the Child and Family Research Center under the College of Health and Human Sciences. Additionally, there are more than 15 child care centers within miles of the Reno campus.
- The College of Extended Studies offers Youth and Sports programs. Kids University is open for seven week-long ½ or full day sessions including over 50 themed programs from which to choose your child’s participative learning experience on a weekly basis. There are also seven sports camps for soccer, basketball, football and volleyball serving a range of age groups. Campus is filled with young adults and children throughout the summer months.
- Voted one of Reno Gazette-Journal’s “Best Family Outings” -- free Watermelon Wednesday concerts on the Quad are fun for all ages. Presented by the University of Nevada, Reno Alumni Association and open to the community.
- The University partners with the community for ARtTown, a month-long affair with a multitude of events for mixed age groups.
- Fleischman Planetarium on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, offers planetarium star shows, SkyDome large-format films, an astronomical museum and exhibits, a free public observatory, and more.
- ElderCollege is a completely member-directed organization sponsored by the University of Nevada, Reno's Extended Studies and offering short-term educational experiences for adults in Reno and Northern Nevada. It seeks to foster intellectual stimulation, new interests and personal development through academic pursuits. ElderCollege provides a community in which to gather, get acquainted and socialize in relaxed settings, and welcomes any adult who subscribes to the spirit and purposes of ElderCollege.
- The Davidson Academy of Nevada is a public school on the campus of University of Nevada, Reno and is the nation's first public school for profoundly gifted children.
Culturally Friendly
The area was first home to Washoe and Paiute Indian tribes and diversified as mining and ranching industries developed in the region. Some of the early immigrants to the area were Basque settlers and today that influence persists with a Center for Basque Studies, a Basque Library collection and the only US Basque Studies doctoral degree program.
With one of the highest growth rates in the country, the community surrounding the University has continued to grow in both size and cultural diversity. As a community with so many newly relocated members, many have found Nevada’s population to be both welcoming and friendly.
Community organizations include a Philippine American Chamber of Commerce and a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The University is host to a variety of Intercultural Organizations for students and faculty which can be found at the following websites:
