Hiring Process:
If selected and approved for hire, you will be contacted with an offer. Once you accept the offer, you and the hiring department will arrange a start date. Following are a few things that will help in understanding and considering your offer:
- Probationary Period
- Classified employees are subject to a probationary period. The length of the probationary period varies and is based on the classification's grade.
- Merit
- All classified employees are eligible for merit annually (up to step 10), with a satisfactory evaluation. Merit moves an incumbent one pay step on the compensation schedule.
- Salary Schedules
- Schedules are available at http://www.unr.edu/hr/compensation/schedules.html and depend upon retirement plan.
- Social Security
- University of Nevada and State of Nevada employees are exempt from contributing to Social Security. Most employees and employers each pay up to 7.65% of covered wages for social security and Medicare taxes. Together these taxes comprise FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act). The social security portion of FICA is 6.2% of your covered wages, up to a maximum wage base of $94,200 in 2006. Social Security will not be deducted from your paycheck. Please consult a tax advisor or the Social Security Administration to determine what the personal consequences of this exemption will mean to you (http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10045.html). The Social Security Protection Act of 2004 requires newly hired public employees to sign a "Statement Concerning Your Employment in a Job Not Covered by Social Security". Form SSA-1945 explains the potential effects of two provisions in the Social Security law on workers whose earnings are not covered under Social Security.
- Retirement Contribution
- Full-time classified employees are subject to a mandatory retirement contribution to Public Employees REtirement System (PERS). Contribution amount varies by retirement plan. Supplemental retirment plans are available on a voluntary basis.
- Paychecks
- Classified paydays are on the 10th and 25th day of each month (semi-monthly). Paychecks may be picked up at the Cashier's Office located on the third floor of the Student Services Building. Direct deposits are also available.
