In addition to traditional benefits such as health care, dental care and retirement, we also offer a wide range of other benefits to attract, support and reward the skilled employees that help the University of Nevada, Reno remain a leading education and research institution.
Traditional Benefits
UNR offers employees an array of convenient and affordable benefits to meet the employees’ needs and the needs of their family members, including quality health and dental care plans, sick and annual leave, 11 paid holidays, mandatory and voluntary retirement plans and a variety of supplemental insurance plans.
Educational Benefits
UNR offers educational benefits for faculty and their eligible dependents that significantly reduces the tuition charge for taking classes at all of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) campuses. Classified employees enjoy fully paid tuition at all NSHE campuses when they enroll in classes that can apply toward the completion of a degree or is job-related.
Additional educational opportunities are available to Faculty and staff by continuing their education or enhancing their work-related skills through various professional development opportunities.
Health Insurances
Here at the University of Nevada, Reno we offer our employees a comprehensive benefit package that includes health, vision and dental insurance, term life insurance (for employee and dependents), accident insurance, business travel insurance and long term disability insurance, all for one small monthly premium.
Medical Insurance
We recognize that each employee’s needs are different — that’s why our comprehensive benefit package allows employees a choice of medical plan. Employee’s can choose between 2 PPO plans and an HMO plan*. All of these plans provide quality health care, prescription drug coverage, vision care, disease management programs, reasonable office co-pays and NO PRE-EXISTING LIMITATIONS.
* The HMO service area is limited to certain counties in the North (Reno area) and South (Las Vegas area).
Dental Insurance
Our dental plan offers employees and their dependents the opportunity to choose any dental provider, however when you choose to visit a dentist that is in the Network your benefits will be paid at a higher level. When you use a networked provider your preventative dental services – exam, cleaning (up to four a year!), bite-wing x-rays and fluoride treatments will be covered at 100% not subject to deductible. After that your basic and major services are subject to a small annual deductible and co-insurance.
Vision Insurance
Vision coverage is nested with your medical plan and allows for one vision exam per covered member per year with reasonable cost sharing.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential assessment and referral service specifically designed to assist employees and families in handling personal and work-related problems and is accessible by phone twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Employees of UNR can take advantage of a range of supplemental insurances offered through the NSHE. Supplemental benefits are voluntary in nature and many of the products offer a guaranteed issue during the first 60 days of employment. Voluntary benefits offered include:

Retirement
Your earnings from your job with the State of Nevada are not covered under Social Security. When you retire, or if you become disabled, you may receive a pension based on earnings from this job. If you do, and you are also entitled to a benefit from Social Security based on either your own work or the work of your husband or wife, or former husband or wife, your pension may affect the amount of the Social Security benefit you receive. Your Medicare benefits, however, will not be affected.
Classified employees are mandated to participate in the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). An employee must be employed at 53% FTE or greater to participate in this plan. PERS of Nevada is a tax-qualified defined benefit plan and offers employees two choices when making their contributions to PERS. The combined employee and employer contribution to this plan is approximately 20%.
New Faculty are mandated to participate in the NSHE Retirement Plan Alternatives (RPA) Plan (if they have an active account with PERS, they must participate in PERS). The provisions of the RPA plan is a 401(a) defined contribution plan. Plan contributions are invested, at the direction of each participant in the funding vehicles available to participants by the approved fund sponsors. The combined employee and employer contribution to this plan is 21%.
There are two additional retirement plans that are voluntary available to UNR Faculty and Staff. The voluntary retirement plans offer our employees the ability to voluntarily save for retirement on a before-tax basis through:
A Tax Sheltered Annuity (TSA) which is also called a 403(b) plan
A Deferred Compensation Plan also called a 457 plan
Paid Time Off
UNR offers faculty and staff generous amounts of time off. Employees accrue annual leave, sick leave and also get 11 paid holidays through the year.

Faculty
Annual Leave
Faculty on an ‘A’ contract accrue 2 days of annual leave per month.
Sick Leave
Full-time faculty on an “A” or “B” contract will start their first year with 30 days of sick leave. After the first year, two days per full month are accrued to a maximum of 96 days. Up to 15 days of sick leave per contract year may be used by the professional staff member to care for or assist family members for the following events: illness; injury, or medical, optometry or dental service or examination. The fifteen-day limitation does not apply if the leave is approved under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
Classified Staff
Annual Leave
Classified staff working a full-time schedule, earn 10 hours of annual leave for each month of continuous full-time service. If you are a part-time employee, you will earn a pro-rated amount of annual leave based on full-time equivalent service. After ten years of continuous service you will earn up to a maximum of 12 hours of annual leave per month; and, with 15 years of service, up to 14 hours per month.
Sick Leave
Employees earn 10 hours of sick leave for each month of full-time service. Part-time employees earn a prorated amount based on full-time equivalent service. Sick leave can be used as soon as it is accrued.
