Workers' Compensation
Overview: Workers' compensation is a State mandated insurance benefit. Benefits are provided for work-related injuries and diseases.
Notice of Injury: Notice of injury or disease must be made within 7 days after an accident or knowledge of a disability (occupational disease) and its relationship to the employment.
Failure to report an injury or disease within 7 days can result in denial of the claim (NRS 616C.025 & 617.346).
Reporting Procedure: An injury or disease must be reported through completion of a C-1 form (Notice of Injury or Occupational Disease Incident Report). The C-1 form can be obtained through department administrative staff or can be accessed by clicking here.
The C-1 form must be signed by a supervisor or their designee.
Ideally, the form should be faxed to the BCN Risk Management/Workers' Compensation Office within 2 working days of the accident per the NSHE Workers' Compensation Policy and Procedure.
Medical Treatment: Only certain medical providers are authorized to provide treatment under workers' compensation. A list of authorized providers can be obtained from department administrative staff or from the BCN Workers' Compensation Office web site.
When medical treatment is initially obtained, a C-4 form (Employee's Claim for Compensation /Initial Report of Treatment) must be completed. This form is obtained through the medical provider and the provider is responsible for distributing the form to the proper parties.
Failure to file a C-4 form with the claims administrator within 90 days of an accident or knowledge of a disability (occupational disease) and its relationship to employment can result in denial of the claim (NRS 616C.025 & 617.346).

Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure
The University of Nevada , Reno has implemented a Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan. The plan is available on the Environmental Health & Safety web site. A hard copy of the plan can be obtained by calling EH&S at (775) 327-5040.
The Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan has many implications regarding the workers' compensation process. What follows is a brief discussion of these implications.
If an employee is exposed to human blood, blood products, and certain human biological fluids while performing job duties, the employee should receive immediate first aid to mitigate the effects of possible exposure. CDC recommendations state that prophylaxis should be initiated within hours of the incident; therefore the employee should immediately go to an urgent care facility or an emergency center authorized to provide treatment under workers' compensation.
The brochure titled Exposure to Blood: What Healthcare Personnel Need to Know from the CDC provides a summary of the risks and treatment guidelines related to an exposure.
While at the urgent care facility or the emergency center, the employee should report the incident as work-related. The employee will then be asked by the facility to complete the top half of a C-4 form (Employee's Claim for Compensation/Report of Initial Treatment). The medical provider will complete the bottom half of the form and submit it to the university's workers' compensation claims administrator.
Once the employee returns to work, he must report the incident to his supervisor and must complete a C-1 form (Notice of Injury or Occupational Disease Incident Report). This form must be completed within 7 days of the exposure to comply with reporting requirements.
If an employee suffers a percutaneous injury from a potentially contaminated sharp, the employee must include the following information on the C-1 form per the OSHA Needlestick Prevention & Safety Act:
- The name and brand of the sharp;
- The department or work area where the incident occurred; and
- An explanation of the incident.
All records regarding the exposure are confidential.
