Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an A & B faculty contract?

An contract faculty member is under contract for 12 months (July 1st to June 30th ) with observances of officially recognized national and state holidays and week-ends. A contracts can be either academic or administrative. Administrative appointments are non-tenure track; academic appointments can be either tenure or non-tenure track. B contracts are for 9-month academic appointments only. B faculty are not contracted for Christmas break, spring break, and a portion of the summer.

Also see the University Administrative Manual, Sections 2,507 and 2.509.

What should be taken into consideration when determining if a position is Letter of Appointment or Classified?

There are three questions that need to be answered about the position:

  1. What makes this a faculty level position?
  2. Does the individual have the education required? If academic (teaching/research), a master's degree in the disipline is required. If administrative, a Bachelor's degree is required. If the individual does not have the minimum degree, a justificatiom memo from the Dean to Human Resources and approved by the Vice-Provost will be needed.

What is the policy on Administrative faculty doing consulting work?

Administrative faculty can teach up to one five-credit course per semester (including summer) for additional compensation. The faculty member must request to teach the class on a Request for Instructional Compensation Administrative Faculty Form, which must be approved by the administrative supervisor and the academic chair or dean.

Do my transcripts have to be official or can I send copies?

Per Board of Regents policy, transcripts must be official, which means that they should be stamped from the granting institution and sent directly to University of Nevada, Reno, Human Resources, Mail Stop 238, Reno, NV 89557.
