The following is a list of Professional Development and Training workshops delivered by our office and held at the Getchell Library. Please see our Training Calendar for upcoming dates and times.

Being Your Own Best Advocate

In order to move ahead professionally and be in control of your life, taking care of yourself must take priority!  Being Your Own Best Advocate will teach you strategies for focusing on what’s important to you and ways to use those strategies to promote yourself in the best light.  Learn how to bring solutions to those in higher level positions.  Being your own best advocate also means becoming a life long learner, being ready for change when it happens as well as embracing it and building relationships of mutual respect.

Effective Business Writing Skills

In today's electronic world, it is still important to know how to effectively write a business correspondence.  This workshop will give you some tools to help you get started (always the toughest part) as well as practice in writing a memo and letter.  Participants will also receive the Gregg Reference Manual (cost for manual: $35.00) and learn how to use this valuable reference tool.

Objectives:

  • Practice a method to help draft memos and letters
  • Identify some helpful proofreading hints.
  • Preview the Gregg Reference Manual and practice searching through the manual for rules. 

Enhancing Your Career with Exceptional Phone Skills

Even though contact is not face-to-face when a telephone exchange takes place, voice, tone and facial expressions can be even more important than in person. This workshop will teach you some simple steps to improve your service over the telephone. Tips will also be given on effective ways to screen calls, take messages, deal with angry callers and help you find fast and friendly wording to make all your telephone exchanges begin and end pleasantly.

Objectives:

  • Learn importance of tone in telephone conversation.
  • Learn tips on screening calls and taking messages.
  • Practice skills for dealing with angry callers in safe setting.

Get Organized

Wouldn't we all like to find an extra hour or two in every day? Using your time and organizational skills more effectively will help you realize that extra time.  This workshop will enable you to assess your own skills and give you strategies to effectively manage your time and priorities. Learning Objectives:

  • Assess and discuss your personal level of effectiveness with regard to time and organization strategies.
  • Learn skills to effectively manage day to day activities without losing sight of your overall goals.
  • Implement a prioritizing system to assist in controlling work flow, time, space and interruptions.

  • Learn how to improve meeting results with facilitation skills

  • Learn to keep meetings on track through conflict and other nonproductive interruptions

Improving Your Success with Time Management

Managing time seems like something one can never master, when in reality we all do a pretty good job of it. This workshop will give you an opportunity to think about what you value and what your goals are. From there, prioritizing and making time for what's important to you will fall into place. Tips on managing your time even more effectively will be shared. Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to write attainable goals.
  • Experience a step-by-step process of writing goals.
  • Discuss the importance of prioritizing.
  • Determine their individual time-wasters.
  • Find solutions to time-wasters and managing time more effectively.

LET'S TALK: Email Etiquette

Using email as a business tool is an everyday occurrence, but what's right and what's wrong? This workshop will give participants tips for using email as an effective business tool that is professional.

Objectives:

  • Learn when to avoid and when to use email.
  • Acquire tips for using to, cc, and bcc,
  • Practice writing an email using tips learned in class.
  • Discuss email cyber manners and netiquette.

Life Management

Do you often feel "out of balance" during the holiday season? Too many outside commitments, not enough time for you? This workshop will help you identify where you're out of balance and show you ways to improve your life management skills to keep your life in balance.

Objectives:

  • Evaluate the balance (or imbalance) in your life.
  • Experience a time matrix to determine where your time is being spent.
  • Establish priorities to improve your life management skills.
  • Clarify values.

Managing Changes Effectively

Are there changes in your work life and home life that you feel are being imposed on you, or are there just a lot of changes happening in your life? Do you wish you could handle those changes in a more productive/positive way? Join us for the brown bag workshop to learn to recognize the stages of change and how to manage change more effectively. Learning Objectives:

Outstanding Customer Service

The University of Nevada, Reno is a service organization. Whether you work directly with students, the public or other university departments, outstanding customer service is a must. At this workshop, you will learn how to give outstanding customer service to all the people you serve in your day to day job.

  • Define “outstanding” customer service
  • Discuss differences between customer service in the private sector vs the public sector
  • Learn/review outstanding customer service skills
  • Discuss common complaints in your respective areas and how to handle them

Prioritizing and Balancing Multiple Tasks

In today's fast paced world, it seems like there's more and more to do and less time to do it. So, how do you decide what's important and whether it truly is a task that can be done while doing something else? This workshop will help you prioritize what's important in your life and help you learn to manage it in the most effective way.

  • Experience a method for prioritizing what's important and needs to be accomplished.
  • Acquire useful tools for managing multiple tasks.
  • Use an activity log to focus on goals.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of multitasking.

Setting Goals to Accomplish All You Want Out of Life

How often have you set goals and then looked at them later realizing either they no longer are applicable or you still want them but are no where near reaching them.  This workshop will help you clarify your personal and job values.  Once you have determined what you value, you'll learn to write measurable, attainable goals and how to carry them out.  So often, the first step is the hardest.  We'll get you through that first step.

If you spend time either attending meetings or being in charge of running meetings, this workshop is for you! Learn the keys to effective meeting management and you'll gain valuable additional work time.

  • Determine steps for keeping meetings on track and for stimulating discussions.
  • Acquire skills for handling difficult situations and conflicts in meetings.

Surviving (And Enjoying) Public Speaking

You don’t have to be a nervous wreck when you give a presentation in front of a group. Learn some techniques to quiet those nerves and look like a pro.

  • Learn facts about public speaking
  • Acquire knowledge of various techniques for overcoming fear of public speaking
  • Develop techniques for handling problem participants
  • Practice with a very short presentation

Surviving the Information Overload

Wasn't technology supposed to make our life easier?  Are you feeling overwhelmed with e-mails, voice mails, and just information in general?  Attend this workshop and learn some tips on dealing with all the information that flows our way.  Get that jump you need to start weeding our unnecessary information.

Objectives:

  • Determine if you suffer from "information overload".
  • Learn how to determine what information to keep and what to throw away.
  • Learn efficient ways to use information tools (i.e., voice mail, e-mail, etc.) to help, rather than hinder our information overload.

Understanding and Managing the Stress in Your Life

Join us at this brown bag workshop for help in coping with the extra stress associated with the beginning of the holiday season.   This workshop is designed to enable participants to identify the stressors in their lives, both at home and at work, to see how those stressors affect them.  They will also learn and practice a variety of effective coping strategies.

Objectives:

  • To assess your personal and job related stressors as well as your reactions to these stressors. 
  • To expand and enhance your effective coping skills for dealing with the stressors in your life.

Using Your Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to use emotions in a positive and constructive way in relationships with others. By developing your emotional intelligence, you can succeed both interpersonally (helping yourself) and interpersonally (helping others).  If you're a supervisor or would just like to learn more about increasing your emotional intelligence, this is a workshop you shouldn't miss!  Both developing effective communication skills and gaining interpersonal expertise will be a result of this workshop.

  • Define emotional intelligence
  • Recognize emotional intelligence skills in yourselves and others.
  • Learn how to use emotional intelligence in dealing with people you supervise and with co-workers.
